Rather than improving my sound by traditional methods such as practice I’ve been looking adding another pedal. Well browsing the internet doesn’t make my fingers so sore:)
Recently been looking at compressors. Have I misunderstood what they do or do they flatten the dynamics so when I play quietly it will make those notes louder and vice-versa?

Have a listen to Mark Knofler. His compressor makes the single note runs sound almost as loud as his chords.

Downward compression (most compressors you have ever heard of) make the loud bits quieter, based on the threshold (where in the gain range the compression begins), ratio (how much it clamps down on the gain), and attack and release times (how quickly it clamps down and how soon it lets up again after the loud part has passed). You can usually then boost the gain after to get back to where you were before, so called "Make up gain", only you now have fewer dynamics.
Never been a huge fan of "compression as an effect" on acoustic or clean electric guitar, although I sometimes use it after the fact in the mix (have a nice pair of hardware comps for that), but I know some people love it, and of course tube overdrive/distortion can be a particularly pleasing form of limiting/compression that whole genres are based around!

Surely you can think of a more interesting pedal to liven up your unrehearsed sound? Octave pedals could add a whole new dimension or two, to your fumblings.

Fair point, but I have gone a little overboard on pedals already: Tuner, Overdrive, Chorus, Flanger, Vibrato, Reverb, Equaliser. But perhaps an Octave would be interesting or I could spend some time working out how to play the thing!

I have an Eventide H9 Max that lives permanently in the FX loop of my DR clone, that thing has whole worlds to explore! Just another suggestion. Can do pretty much anything, but mostly limited to only one effect at a time.

Thanks the Eventide looks great but out of my price range and probably overkill for my skill level.

Compression is a powerful tool - I’ve created a video on the concept in the Home Recording sub forum on Home Recording.
Used live it needs to be a subtle tool. Like all pedals you need to use them a bit to understand how they can really help.
