Nice little video posted where Clive talks composition and plays a 1935 Martin 000-45. Bit of Bown chat too.

Such a nice guy and one of the best, an inspiration. Thanks for posting. Perhaps Martin can clarify what banjo three finger "scrote" style is? 17:35 for the Bown content! Incredible guitars aren't they dreadnought28? Great comments re. recording yourself, releasing tension and the importance of melody - sound advice for everyone. Jonny p.s. I didn't realise Nicola Hall had taught Clive Carroll, watch this if you don't know of her, she really was unbelievable (sadly retired young due to injury):

That was fun - thanks Cams - enjoyed it a lot. Long been a favourite player of mine. The final piece (28.20 ish) was just sublime! I hardly dare mention it, being His Cliveness and all, but it seemed to me that in the first piece he played, in the second half when the bass strings came in, the bottom string sounded not quite in tune to me.... esp when played a little harder, which may well give rise to a v slightly sharper note. Or is it just me? Keith PS Not sure Earl Scruggs would want to be knwn as "Scrote"!

Thankfully I am ignorant when it comes to things of the banjo.

Clive also intimated that the 00045 tuning machines were a bit iffy as well. Clive is probably my favourite player at the moment but I do wish he would release more CD's because there is always a big gap in between - 1999 - 2004 - 2009 - 2016!! Having said that they are worth waiting for Phil

I think it was just that had a short scale guitar tuned down to B with a light gauge string. It would be a challenge to fret that string and have it stay in tune I would think.
I knew that last slip jig as Catherine Kelly's, or at least it was very similar to that. I suppose the names of tunes depends upon where one got it from in many instances.

Great video - thanks for linking Cams. Plenty of what he said chimed with me - the off-putting regimented approach of classical lessons, revelation of open tunings, your music affecting your general mood. Interesting general guidelines and thoughts too. Lovely to see someone talking about composition with an emphasis on mood creation. As usual, when someone that knows what they're doing talks about composition, I find myself being reminded of the huge inadequacies in my musical education! Mark

He's great isn't he. I like the absolute zero attempt to pretend to be cool. No pretensions, I like that. I always get the impression that what I'm seeing at any particular moment is about 1% of his capability on the instrument. thanks for posting Cams

No, I don't think it was the low B that was out but it doesn't matter. My short scale guitars can't cope with a low B. C is the limit for them. Mind you a very low action doesn't help. Phil

Phil Just re read my post and it sounds rather dismissive of what you said Cams. It wasn't meant to be because you may well be right Phil

B is really pushing it for a short scale but wasn’t that guitar an OM? You could Probably get away with the almost drone sound. I don’t go below C even with a fan fret.
