Hi all, I currently have a Tonedexter with me for review and I thought people might want to hear some initial recordings... These were done with a Rode NT1a pointing at the 12/14th fret, slightly angled towards the body/soundhole and about 6-10 inches away... I've then recorded the same playing by splitting the signal into two channels of my interface - one with the tonedexer in line, the other with nothing. No processing was done after recording.

I probably won't go too deep into review/comparision to my current gear here as, obviously, the video review is coming up and I want to leave my thought till then but, currently, I feel that the OM2h ss vn sounds better than my OM2hT - not sure why that is, can't quite seem to get a good tone from the Traditional at the moment without it being too honky...

The tonedexter tracks do sound better to ne Ben. Lovely playing Phil Thanks Phil (and thanks for your CD purchase as well!) Yep the TD sounds better than the raw K&K tracks, and they sound better through the amp as well - whether they sound better than the K&K through the Felix and then into the AER I'm not sure of yet... They definitely sound less 'pickup-y' but there's some elements of the tone that is lacking - the 'immediacy' of the KK/Felix tone and the beefier low end for example. Plus I think there's some ring-i-ness in the mids which needs addressing... I'm going to try a couple of things today... 1. Redo the Traditional Collings wavemaps 2. try putting the mic through my Felix first to EQ out some of the mids and I have a rehearsal tonight that I'm going to take the TD along to to try it with some other instruments. But I think the potential is there for a great tone...

Even through my small PC speakers it was obvious that the Tonedexter was an improvement - the "plastickyness" disappeared altoghether. Nice! Keith

Keith Hi Keith - yeah it's definitely an improvement over the 'plain' K&K tone - it still needs EQing to sound it's best to me but I managed to get a better sound from it today but putting the mic through my Felix first to EQ the mic to the sound I wanted (which, as a rule of thumb, takes some mids out) before training... It's definitely a bit of a rabbit-hole gizmo, even now just posting about it I can't help but think 'maybe if the mic was moved that way a bit, it'd sound better!'... When we get it in the studio at least I'll have someone to do the 'ears' bit to get the mic in the right place

I shall wait until the review to comment properly but I have used my Tonedexter on many gigs now and the sound is always excellent (depending on who is running the board).
Over the PA I think you will find the appreciation of improvement even more dramatic.
this is without a doubt one of the bets purchases I have made. But I welcome back with more thoruhs and experiences after the review.

When I comment it will be on usability in a more giving sense, for example, no battery power can be a bit frustrating.

I'm looking forward to hearing one of these. Any chance you could bring yours to RMMGA Andy?

I've been exploring the TD for a few months and if my experience is anything to go by you might get better results from another mic. The nt1a is super clean but the wavemaps it produces can be a bit "phasey" compared to a small diaphragm condenser or even an sm57, which has a nice solid, predictable response.
Most audiences wouldn't differentiate.
You may also like to know that a trawl of other fora will provide links and advice on battery packs that can be used for the TD. To my knowledge it's not been endorsed by TD designers but I've been in chats where they have contributed and they've not warned against. The procedure is well tested now and seems to be reliable.

1st post and despite my username I’m not affiliated with AuiodSprockets TD. I do love the thing and found this forum discussing so why not jump in and share a few things….
In regard to battery power - stick between 9-15VDC and you’re good to go. TD draws about 0.3A majority of the time. I power mine and many of my guitar/audio gear with RC Lipo. Usually 3S 2200mAh.
TD is sweet and I’ve found 12mm piezo discs in bulk to fabricate my own soundboard pickups very similar to K&K Puresound.
For Dobro I glued 4qty to the bridge blades. 2 on each blade and trained TD with SM57 - sounds wickedly good.
AKG 1000S does a nice job on my acoustic guitars but I preferred the 57 for Dobro. Go figure…
I’ve professionally amplified acoustic guitars and various instruments more than 45 years and TD is a major game changer.
I never ever gush like this about a piece of gear but TD is blowing my mind and saving a lotta cash for pickup installations.
Bypassed Taylor Expression Gen 2 in favor of the 12mm piezos. Now with all my acoustics similarly equipped I can mix/match wave maps. Play a Martin but spit out a Taylor 714CE sound - wow!
