So, I'm doing a gig tomorrow evening called "Songs of Social Conscience" for churches in Lancashire ... a mix of songs, discussion, readings, food but, sadly, no booze The intention is to show that the protest songs of yesteryear have, sadly, still got a great deal of resonance in today's society and to try and encourage churches to think about how they can respond (both corporately and individually) to the needs of their local community and wider issues. The "set list" is: I've Thought About It (McTell) Crow On The Cradle (Carter) Where Have All The Flowers Gone? (Seeger) Universal Soldier (Buffy St Marie) Jimmy Newman (Paxton) Streets Of London (McTell) Blowin' In The Wind (Zimmerman) Whose Garden Was This? (Paxton) Peppers And Tomatoes (McTell) We Can Move Mountains (Nicholls) Something Inside So Strong (Siffri) We Shall Overcome (Seeger et al) with "Stranger To The Seasons" and "Where Do The Children Play" in reserve for if conversation dries up I'm taking Naomi, Suki and Celtic Tigger ... I'd normally take Sybil (particularly for "Something Inside So Strong" and "We Can Move Mountains" but she's developed an annoying buzz on a couple of strings and I have no idea what to do about that so she'll be staying at home until Dave can have a look at her in Halifax) Can anyone think of anything obvious (and from the 60s/70s that I've missed off that would be good?

A great list of songs which has rekindled in me some very fond memories of my youth.
Some others I recall from that time of hope and optimism: Now That the Buffalo's Gone (Buffy St M - it still brings a lump to my throat) Little Boxes (Pete S, whom I recall performing this in a slot on Sunday Night at the London Palladium!) The War Drags On (Donovan)
Thanks so much for the wonderful trip down memory lane.
Brian

Yay! And Dave emailed me with a 'quick temporary fix' that doesn't include the use of Allen Keys or bridge shaving which works lovely (and I feel stupid for not having thought of it myself) so.... Sybil's coming, too!

Leon Rosselson's brilliant song has been done by loads of folk, (Dick Gaughan does a stunning version and even dear old Billy Bragg does too) but this "amateur" version is up there with the best of them -
-
Three chords and you're away!
That's a superb idea for an evening leo, and some great song choices - got me thinking.....
All the best for the evening - would love to know how it goes. Keith

Hmm .... And in DADGAD, too, by the look of it - perfick for our Sybil...Was it just me or did the tempo increase when the gob iron kicked in? I doubt I've enough time to learn the words before tomorrow night, but I'll put it in the bank for if I ever get asked again

Little Boxes (Pete S, whom I recall performing this in a slot on Sunday Night at the London Palladium!) Brian I always forget about Little Bixes ... I can't pretend it's my favourite song but it's one the expected audience would know... I've tried to do a mix of 'singalong standards' and 'listen to the words' stuff... with a PowerPoint of relevant images for each song lolling behind (which gives the added fun of making me concentrate on timing) Still, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Still only three chords, and yes, his timing is a bit odd in quite a few places. Do you know "There were roses"? You've probably heard Cara Dillon sing it, but it's writer Tommy Sands does it really well too. Maybe sectarianism might be a bit strong for them though! Keith

Well, no worse than the verse in Diggers that berates the clergy Of course, as non-conformists (and Reformed, at that!) any ministers at the gig will be sitting smugly thinking 'that means the Anglicans, that does...not us'

How about:
"Masters of War" (Dylan/Martin Simpson/Kula Shaker)
"Universal Soldier" (Donovan)

I'd love to incorporate "What You Do With What You've Got" somewhere in the set but I don't have the chutzpah to do either Eddie Reader's or Dick Gaughan's version... But it's a proper powerful song, full of challenge....

A great idea and worthy project, Leo.
Sam Stone by John Prine would be on my list.
