Stefan says this on his news page: Today Mark Knopfler visited. He played a New World and two Martin Simpson models, eventually choosing one of the MS models. He said he plans to use it at home and for recording, so didn't want a pickup fitted. And he wouldn't let me fit strap buttons because he couldn't bear to have holes drilled in the guitar.

Very cool, just saw him at the RAH and was hoping he'd play his new Sobell... sadly no...

I'm guessing he didn't have to wait however long the waiting list is!
interestingly*, despite only buying 1 of the 3 guitars he tried, neither of the others is listed as "available now" on the website...
* not really interesting at all

I heard Mr Knophler only went to Sobell, when he couldn't get the Crafter he wanted.

I would like to think that if Mr Knopfler were Korean, he would support his local luthier

Well he was born in Glasgow, so surely this would be more up his street...

Well, I never knew that... Stefan's not exactly a Geordie either I suppose.

Good point pct57 - a couple of posts seemed to miss the point which was only vaguely made I have to admit.
Besides my personal interest, I thought that it was good that such a celebrity buying a UK-made guitar could only be a good thing, not only for the maker, but for the profile of British luthiery.
Leo's point is interesting though.
Also made me think that a Knopfler Signature may be in the pipeline.

Jonny, Good point and very good for Stefan. But I'd say in the case of MK it's a little belated and others carried the torch for Stefan early in their careers and played their Sobell's on stage rather than at home - Andy Irvine, Martin Simpson, Maart Allcock etc. Lot's of North Easterners seem to be rediscovering their "folk roots" at a certain age, first Sting and now Mark Knopfler - makes you think ...we are the Sobells of Swing. Du du duuuuur, du dudu duuuur. Keith How about "Money for nothing and your picks for free"

Also made me think that a Knopfler Signature may be in the pipeline. How about a Rick Parfitt model? Everyone knows Status Quo are a superior band to Dire Straits. DAD ROCK WILL NEVER DIE. EVEN IF DAD ROCK MUSICIANS DIE THEY WILL BE RESURRECTED TO PLAY THEIR FENDERS (like Romero Zombies).
