Also made me think that a Knopfler Signature may be in the pipeline. How about a Rick Parfitt model? Everyone knows Status Quo are a superior band to Dire Straits. Yes . . . but U2 have The Edge

Oooh, scratch your eyes out! Lots of bitchiness here - what for? At this stage in their glittering careers, both Mark and Stefan have surely earned the right to do just what they bloody well like with their guitars. Give the guys a break - each is a superb artist and each has influenced countless players and luthiers. I myself was allowed to jump the Sobell queue way back in 1981 when I was nowhere near being a star, but Stefan and I just got along - does that make me a bad person too?

I've just read through this thread again, and I can't see 'lots of bitchiness'?? The only thing I would say is that if you had been waiting an age for your lovely new Sobell, and then somebody waltzes to the front of the queue, I'm sure you would be a bit pissed off? But I guess that's the kind of world we live in.

There's usually a lot of love here for Stefan's guitars - some people don't get beyond the price factor though... but they are world-class instruments and should be priced to match that market. So many makers make pastiches, Stefan broke the mould with his guitars and has had a big influence on many makers; many describe the Sobell sound as being the English sound and maybe that's what Mr Knopfler was looking for.
The New World model, Michael plays above, was Stefan's nod to the American 'sound' - and he told me it appeals to players in the States, it is still very much a Sobell though... which is all very interesting as Stefan is of German descent, as was CF Martin.

But I guess that's the kind of world we live in. We don't know he jumped the queue - the guitars Knopfler played may even have been prototypes, of which I know Stefan makes a lot, a little tweak here or there, that's how he's developed his guitars over the years. There could be other reasons.
About 18 years or so ago I decided I was going to bite the Sobell bullet. I rang him up fully aware of the waiting list — the guitars were still expensive but more modestly priced than now but the queues were still large. He surprised me by telling me that he one available. A client had ordered one and had specified that he wanted no markings at all on te fret board. Stefan had forgotten and had put fret dots on and the client had asked him to make another!
Very quickly I arranged to have the guitar. I arranged to go up to Hexham for the weekend and then the next day my computer blew up in the middle of a major piece of work and I hadto shell out the best part of two grand to get it replaced. Sadly, the Sobell went to somebody else!
I got the impression from Stefan that it wasn't unusual for him to be dealing with very picky customers, which I guess is understandable at this price and standard.
