Does anyone use a preamp such as a Baggs Para di into an acoustic amp? Is it really needed? I use K&K puremini pickups. I've seen on other forums about impedance matching with the Baggs and K&K and now i'm confused.

Yup I have done, these days I’m either just using a mic or plugging straight into a PA, but I used to (and still do if there’s no PA) use an AER Compact 60, and always used a Baggs Para DI before going into the amp, my only reason - it just sounded better, I got a lot more control on the EQ side of things.

Yes I do. I have a small Pick up the World preamp that plugs into the end pin jack. Sounds better and it has a gain control which is really useful. Been using it for 17 or 18 years.

bellyshere - there is no prob using a preamp in front of an acoustic amp. Gives you some easy fingertip adjustment (plus a quick "off") without having to go near the amp. Also gives you extra bands of eq as the preamp controls are likely at slightly different frequencies from those on the amp. I use K&K minis in several instruments, and they are not necessarily a problem into Baggs PADI - I use that combination every Sunday with my church setup and have no problem getting a good sound. Yes, there's a lot of theoretical stuff out there regarding impedance mismatches, but in practice I have found there's usually no problem. I prefer my K&K Pure preamp or my Orchid acoustic preamp though, just because they have less but larger knobbage and are more intuitive to set up quickly. Keith

I might try the K&K preamp. I do like a large knobbage.

Yep, I always use a Para DI between the guitar and amp. For passive pickups, like the Fishman Neo D humbucker, which sounds great but has a weedy output, the extra gain is very handy, but even with an active pickup you get extra control and it just seems to make it sound nicer!

My para DI does sound okay with my fishman pickup but sounds a bit boomy with my K&K.

My para DI does sound okay with my fishman pickup but sounds a bit boomy with my K&K. Have a play with yer knobbage Shaun! These different pickups have inherently different characteristics and will need different treatment to sound at their best. It was twiddling about with this sort of thing that made me put the same pickups in all my guitars. Still needs a bit of tweaking here and there, but much less. And simpler preamp controls help a lot here, which is why I tend to prefer the K7K or Orchid ones. I use my PADI with the same guitar (O25/K&K) and in the same setting every week so it doesn't need adjusting. Took me some time to find the the best settings, but worth it as I now never have to adjust it! Keith
