I'm starting to play around with alternate tunings, and was wandering if anyone can recommend any good DADGAD beginner tunes to get stuck into one which have a tab available would be most useful.
Thanks in advance
Nick

I can highly recommend Doug Young's book, 'Understanding DADGAD' www.dougyoungguitar.com/books.phpThis comes with an audio CD illustrating the tunes. He explains the theory behind the different shapes you can use in different keys and gives excellent examples. Very good for getting a grip on where you can go with the tuning, and some full pieces in addition to exercises. If you just want to launch yourself into the tuning, download some tab and go for it. Look on Doug Young's site for his tab for 'Shenandoah', for instance, and check out his YouTube video of the tune, then try it yourself. A basic search for 'Al Petteway tabs' will also give you plenty of DADGAD hits to try. Kym

I am a fan too of Mark Thomson's book (I got mine fro forum activist Dave White) and Al Petteway. I also get a lot of pleasure from Rob McKillop's Scottish Guitar Books ( see Amazon), which have some cracking tunes both simple and more complex.

Thanks for the recommendations, I have got hold of the Don Young tab for Shenandoah to get started with. I'll have to keep an eye out for a copy of the Mark Thomson's book as it gets plenty of recommendations.
Thanks again

I particularly use a lot of al petteway's pieces for teaching (and performing). some of his pieces are very complex, but his tab books which are available for his 4 solo albums all contain some very playable dadgad (and others) pieces.

Just by the way, I've seen several mentions of Mark Thomson's book on the forum over the last few months. Does anyone know if this still available to purchase somewhere? I love his tunes and playing.

.... apart from books, tabs etc. here are two good quick resources for trying out DADGAD tuning. They are both quite different in their own way, the second being quite funny, albeit informative.
