just to check it out, see what the local talent was like. There was a fantastic band with 6 people - one was an amazing percussionist who played a washboard and other hand held things. I was a bit intimidated and thought I'd not be playing there anytime soon, until this guy got up with a gypsy jazz guitar and played Am for about 5 mins, then switched to E. Just strumming, with no perceivable rhythm pattern. It's only on once a month but I might bring my guitar next time....

Dunno how I missed this as I usually check in once or twice a day...sorry! For a potential busker and recording artist, you should defo have taken over that open mic - you'd have rocked the place! I can say that as I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat playing in public anyway, but that's not an excuse for you! Get your songs out there, girl!

I can say that as I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat playing in public anyway, but that's not an excuse for you! Not an excuse?? I'm a scaredycat too.... but I popped into the local music shop and talked to the guy who owns it (he runs the open mic) he said that support for it was waning and he's gone from 2 a month down to 1 and if things didn't pick up he was thinking about stopping altogether. I told him I would definitely be there and play next time.... The pub was very noisy, the only songs that held anyone's attention were upbeat and well-known. It would not be the right setting to play any of my original stuff.....so I gotta figure what else to play. There is another open mic tonight at a different pub, supposed to be more college types playing but I will check it out if I have enough energy. Going out on a Sunday night when I've got to be up early on Monday is not my favourite thing.....

Good to hear you'll be playing out Lynn. Don't be scared of doing your own stuff - there will be some people listening even if it doesn't seem like it. And it's good to get used to playing your stuff anywhere other than at home. By all means do something upbeat and familiar to start with, but your stuff is just too good not to get out there. The open mike I go to is extremely noisy - the other few players just bash away with Oasis/Coldplay etc covers with manic strummage and people love it. I just sit and play quiet fingerstyle love songs cos that's what I enjoy doing. Doesn't bother me that the majority of people don't seem to be paying attention - someone always come up at some stage and asks about one of the songs or says something nice. Trouble is, they tend not to buy me a drink! ;D

Perhaps a good excuse here to develop your Beatles repertoire, WV Not only will you rule the forum with your deluge of submissions, but you'll have a ready-made set for your raucous open-mic audience ;D

Thanks guys....I went to a different open mic last night that was incredibly fun. It was at this cute little old pub down a tiny backstreet of run-down terraced houses....it has a lot of unadvertised live music stuff going on. I lived near this pub for over 7 years and never knew it was there... I met a lot of other musicians and found that Boston has much more going on that I ever imagined, though much of it only gets out by word-of-mouth. There is a jam session every Sunday afternoon in a village not too far away.....it seems there are a lot of things I can get involved in. There is a blues club starting this Thursday night...not really my thing but would be fun to see what goes on, and would be a good excuse to get working on my slide! Unfortunately most of this stuff starts after 9:30pm and doesn't really get going to closer to 11.....with the early morning starts at the shop I won't be able to go to everything!! I will eventually play my own stuff at the open mics. When I was gigging years ago I was the rhythm/harmony person and am comfortable in that roll. It's going to take time to feel confident playing out by myself....once I feel okay about it I'll do some originals. I think for the moment just being able to remember the chords and sing in tune will be a challenge, things always head south when I'm nervous!

Well it was supposed to be a blues jam tonight starting at 8:30 (I even got an invitation on facebook!) but it turned out to be a blues band starting at 10:00.....and no jamming at all. I had a quick half and left....not that I have anything against the band but didn't want to stay up late if there was no actual jamming going on. Kinda disappointing....
