My experience was that banging away continuously at one particular piece was a bad idea. I found that when I went away and worked on other things for a while I not only improved technique and loosened up in general, such that I might approach the stumbling block with more confidence, but actually internalised the tune over time so that it seemed easier when I went back to it. I'm a great believer in the idea that much creative activity takes place on an unconscious level and that some things will simply arrive when they're ready.
