Yes 145 squid for a bone nut (50), saddle (30) + set-up (65) - unbelievable. I was advised to go to the guy by Ian... the problem now is that the guitar is with him in the shop. It's my brother's Takamine and the set-up is his 50th b'day present from me - so it looks like I'll be making the nut and saddle myself when I see him next (about 1.50 pound each from Octypus in Turkey).
I was charged 70 for all that last year by a well-known maker... I need to have a word with Mr Ian59LP.

That's an astonishing sum of money! Maybe he can justify it, but it's a LOT

Sounds like a good incentive to do it yourself - nut and saddle blanks are cheap enough, and it's a lot easier to do than you might think. Keith

Well, I haven't tried making a nut yet (although I DID buy the files ) I did make a bone saddle for my Seagull out of a blank I got from Martin Edwards, and it was a really satisfying experience, and very successful. I'm not even that good with my hands, but even I managed a decent result. I would only charge £45 for my nut

Well - my car mechanic charges me £45 an hour plus VAT for labour costs and I respect his skill. I suppose at the hourly rates people expect of guitar makers then a fiver for the parts and they owe you £100 for the labour That said £150 is very top end I suspect - I just looked up some charges that a good American repair man put up on a Luthiers Forum and for a nut/saddle/setup package he is quoting $140-180. Rory quotes £30 for a new saddle, £35 for a new nut and £30 plus string cost for a set up. It would be interesting to see how much someone like Chas Chandler in Richmond would charge.

I suppose it depends how much you value his work (and how much he values his own too!). Rory's prices seem extremely fair.

I paid 68p for a bag of dry roasted. Have I been ripped off?
