That is very sad news indeed. Had it not been for the work he did in reviving those wonderful old guitars I can't imagine they would have been anywhere near as popular and the music played on them woudld more likely as not have faded in to obscurity. Let's hope the work he did is carried on.

Derek Trucks and Susan Tadeschi, love this song and the slide playing is superb, what a touch the guy has.

Besides being a great song and a great performance from both of them, the song is in G but if you look, I'm pretty sure he's in open E but playing in G. Gives it a different fell from plaing in the more obvious open G.

I'm trying slide for the first time...and it isn't sounding too good! Do I need to :- a) Tune guitar to another tuning rather to the current EADGBe.....and b) Raise the action on my guitar?

Hi Stan, Try open D tuning-DADF# AD. plenty of lessons on youtube and you may need to raise the action slightly. Enjoy.

Enjoyed watching and listening to the previous vid of Chris James....very nice indeed. I'm on the lookout for a second acoustic. Maybe set it up with an action purely for playing slide on. Have contemplated putting one of those 'nut raiser' contraptions on my current guitar.....but yeah.....a second guitar would be nice.

Hi Stan, Cottonopolis is right. It's better at least when starting slide, to use an open tuning. Either open D (as above) or open G (DGDGBD.) As for a nut raiser, I'm not keen personally unless you want to play lap-slide. It's harder work fretting with one of those on and usually slide the "conventional way up" is a mixture of fretting and sliding. A raised action is a good idea, however, and you can do this by putting a slice or two of something like a dead credit card under the removable bit of the bridge. This will lift the action up enough to reduce the clatter of slide against fret-board. I also like the idea of having a guitar set up specially for slide as you may well want heavier strings than normal, to get a better tone. Have a look around the S/hand market and remember the neck doesn't have to be too straight. You can pick up some real bargains like that. I started messing around playing slide on my wife's old acoustic which had a neck like a banana. Lessons wise, Rick Payne does some really good ones for slide which you can find in the usual places. Hope that helps and let us know how you get on. And welcome to the world of slide.

Hello slidingwolf. I'm having a ball looking for a cheap acoustic on internet selling sites and charity shops. Looking for something that is structurally sound...but it's set up doesn't really matter so much. It gives a totally different slant on looking for a guitar. I'm not rushing in though....there's quite a few to look at and consider for £30....or less!!
