This is a talk by the amazing Evelyn Glennie. Yes, a percussionist, but with a lot of good things to say that are relevant to all musicians. It's worth saving it for when you have half an hour or so to concentrate on it properly.

Fascinating stuff, Keith. Thanks for pointing the way to that.
As I listened I related to a lot of what she said through memories of being in a band where we literally produced music in a hurry, running through songs only once or twice before performing. The leader, Bob Pedley, used to say we only needed two gears for what we played in such circumstances, "soppy" and "loud," because that's what the public responded to, that audiences wouldn't even notice gaffes, and that as long as we played in time we were doing our job. Interpretation? Listening? Pfft!
It's fair to say we worked regularly, with some good spec gigs for BBC Pebble Mill and Central and playing pick-up, as well as the weddings and other functions, but I never really felt engaged with it, and was even quite relieved when I left. I now meet for jams with a former bandmate who's become a music teacher in a local school, and he says that he feels more like a musician now than he ever did back then.

Absolutely wonderful vid. Some marvelous insights and an amazing performance at the end. The sounds she conjured from beating pieces of wood are magical. Thanks Keith.
