James Taylor: September 30th, Manchester. £125 for 2 tickets but it's a once in a lifetime chance, really... I saw him 2-3 years ago in Birmingham. Before the concert I wondered whether age might have caught up with him like many other older performers and was delighted that it hadn't. the concert was excellent and I'd agree with Leoo that if you want to treat yourself its one not to miss.

Bridgewater Hall in Manchester tonight for Newton Faulkner (with support from Sam Brookes). Can't say I know a great deal (i.e. any) of Mr Faulkner's work but my eldest daughter mistakenly bought 2 tickets when the Ticketmaster website froze and she pressed refresh ... they refused to refund. We're at opposite sides of the auditorium - I suspect my daughter is most pleased

Hi, for those in East Hampshire, West (and east) Sussex, and south Surrey, - I run an intimate little Acoustic Music club very close to Chichester. We meet every 2nd & 4th Thursday in a function room (OK Skittle alley) of a delightful thatched country pub. Everyone gets a 10 or 15 spot (depending on numbers. For details and/or to be added to the mailing list, please PM me.
Best to all pickers.

If you're doing nowt on April 25th then you could do a whole lot worse than go along to Liverpool Acoustic at View Two Gallery, 23 Mathew St, Liverpool, L2 6RE to see Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig. Here's one of my favourite songs of theirs: "I Will" - all about self-determination (I spent an unpleasant hour trying to learn Brian's opening riff, can't say I've nailed it yet!)

Eric Clapton is playing Glasgow and I think London in June around the 21st I think and there's talk of it being his last . Paul Carrack is playing piano and there are a few other superb musicians playing along with him too .

So, tonight I'm off to see Craig and Willoughby at The Boathouse in Parkgate... Then, tomorrow night, I'm going to see Walk Off The Earth with my eldest daughter - who has broken the news to me, none too gently and with a look of scorn on her visage, that there won't be any chairs; it's a stand up gig. It might end up being a lie down gig by the second set... maybe I could take a shooting stick...

So, 2 nights - with totally different atmospheres! Thursday at The Boathouse (Parkgate near Chester) was definitely your more traditional folk club type thing. Upstairs at a pub, the rooms set out with chairs in rows, stage central. Cathryn and Brian spotted me as we went in and came over to say 'Hi'. Got a big hug from Cathryn and a manly handshake from Brian - they've both been very supportive of me during the Hillsborough stuff that's been going on with Facebook messages and tweets and I think Sara was a bit surprised by just how down to earth they are. Sara (she who deigns to share her life with me) wanted a cup of coffee so I went back downstairs and joined a LOOOOOOONG queue - which ended up with me being given a tray with a cup, a small jug of milk and a cafetiere - it's that sort of pub! When I got back upstairs Cathryn Craig was sitting next to Sara having a right old chinwag. The night was opened by the resident singers, Mike and Bud) who got the mood flowing with "Rambling Boy' and a few other 'most of you will know this' songs. Mike on Guitar and vocals and Bud played the guitar, occasional tin whistle and vocal harmonies. 30 minutes (about 5 songs) and then Craig and Willoughby did their opening set. Most of the songs were from their 'Real World' album - including "Time Has Proved You Right" which Cathryn dedicated to me, which was kind of ace. A short break after 45 minutes to charge our glasses (we didn't as I couldn't face the queue again) before another 45 minute set ending with Mike and Bud joining them on stage for a final couple of numbers. Brian's guitar playing is just out of this world and Cathryn is very self-deprecating about her own guitar playing but it is the p4erfect accompaniment to the songs and as a background to Brian's riffs and solos. On the way home Sara said "they just seem to know the right words to convey a feeling or a mood" which, to me, means it's great writing and performing. A smashing evening then although, despite and audience of 60 or so folk, sadly there were quite a few spare seats. Sara and I were amongst the youngest there. Total cost of evening: Tickets 2 x £8.50, coffee and a diet Pepsi £4.50, meal beforehand £46.00. So on to Walk Off The Earth last night... no spare seats in the venue (because there were no seats at all!), maybe 1500 punters (including a mosh pit, a carpet which was tacky underfoot on account of the amount of beer which had been spilled on it... Sara and I met our eldest daughter in Pizza Express on Oxford Street in town (it was she who had got the tickets and we felt we owed her at least a meal.) Doors opened at 18:30 with the venue having a music curfew of 22:00 so we ambled in at about 19:15 - half way through the support set. The support band was Camera2 and, whilst competent, their music all sounded a wee bit 'samey' to me after a while. Lots of flashing lights, smoke machine going off with virtually every songs ... it was actually quite difficult to see them at times! at 20:15 WoTE came on to cheers and yelling and more pyrotechnics. They certainly know how to put on a show! I'm still not entirely sure how many of them there are! Some numbers had just 4 of them playing whilst others had 7 (I think there's actually 5 in the core band). Not exactly what I'd expected having seen their YouTube videos - not quite as sedate! There was a real energy with lots of running around and swapping instruments (everybody seemed to play everything) and a nice mix of acoustic and electric instruments. They invited the crowd (I find it difficult to call it an audience) to sing along an join in with quite a few of the chorusy numbers and the crowd enthusiastically complied. Needless to say, Sara and I were amongst the oldest there and hid at the back well away from the flying beers. WoTE did a full set of 75 minutes before finishing off with this: Is it folk? Who cares? It was a great evening, full of energy, great music and good feeling. I wasn't even too bothered by the £16 car parking charge Total cost of evening: Pizza Express (for 3) £62.40, Tickets 3 x £15, parking £16 Both evenings providing value for money as far as I'm concerned (not sure where the video's gone - it shows up in the preview!)

If anybody is interested in the guitar playing of Pierre Bensusan, he is playing in the UK this year. I have just booked tickets for Wednesday 18th June at Sheffield Greystones Inn. Wednesday 18th June 8pm £10 >TICKETS Pierre Bensusan Singer, composer and a contemporary acoustic guitar genius. "The way the guitar would want to sound if it played itself." If “World Music” is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms, traditional instruments and harmonic colors, French-Algerian guitarist, singer and composer Pierre Bensusan can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and diverse world musicians of our time. There are a number of other venues, to see the locations see here: Tour Dates

Recently went to see Joe Brown who is currently on tour. I saw his third gig and would heartily recommend seeing this old timer doing his stuff. He is a better musician than many give him credit for and puts out a programme full of variety. Catch it if you can. Loved this little Italian tune. !
