Hi everyone sorry to bring up the painful subject of strings but I am interested to hear peoples views.I play a Huss and Dalton 00 and have always used Phosphor Bronze 52-11s - this was mainly because I didn't want to put anything heavier on the instrument and put any stress on it- should I increase the gauge up to 53 -12 as the tone I am getting at present is sweet but not particularly deep or punchy? - same query applies to a Martin 028v which I mainly play at home.

I use 12-53 on everything except vintage guitars. I don't think general stress on the instrument is an issue, but I know Collings, for example, say not to go any heavier than light gauge on their 00s because of the small bridge footprint.
You could always shoot H&D an email and ask them, but I'd imagine 12s would be perfectly ok.

You could find that low tension 12s might improve the tone while not adding to the tension. <cough> Newtone Heritage <cough> ..... who said that! There is a review of a Huss & Dalton 00SP on Premier Guitar.com here which says that model has a decal in the soundhole warning to “USE LIGHT-GAUGE STRINGS ONLY". But then I notice strings called "light" gauge usually seem to be 12s, and 11s are "Custom Lights" - so on that basis 12s seems OK. I'm used to cheaper factory built parlours, which are built to such over-safe standards that they are less prone to issues from string tension. Mark

I think in this situation 12s would be the best match. 11s can sound thin even on a parlour. I am a great fan of mediums on my larger guitars but I've never even felt the need to try them on smaller bodied instruments. Mediums are really all about tone, especially with celtic fingerstyle stuff. Parlours really excel at other stuff. Try the 12s.
