Contemplated trying alternate tuning but I didn't think DADGAD could be this difficult. So I'm going to have a go in dropped D and see what (hopefully nice) sounds I can get playing around the fretboard......maybe around the D, G and A chords.

I hate to reinvigorate this thread - but I just had to share - I have been practicing a piece I love but there is that fast bit starting sometime soon after the 1 minute mark. UGH! I love everything about this piece except for that half minute of craziness in the middle that I may or may not ever conquer. However baby steps - at my rather rudimentary level I'm just practicing increasing speed at arpeggios on single bass notes moving up and down the fretboard on a single string - and I discovered practicing major minor and modal scales is a great way to avoid boredom - and helps lock them in a bit better too! Next the Byzantine scale (which definitely has some possibilities for improvisation Mark) byzantine scale

I do love the sounds of Villa-Lobos ... as for the playing of it I recall even the simpler sounding bits could be very tricky! Kevin Loh most definitely knows what he is doing. If you're getting somewhere even with the slower parts of the piece you're doing well Julie. I'd run out of steam on the DADGAD mode exploration after Phrygian and Dorian. Now you've just yourself to blame for highlighting that Byzantine scale, but I couldn't resist particularly when I saw it's a relative of the Phrygian scale. 'Bye Bye Byzantine' - Improv in EStandard tuning as the TW133 was sitting nearby. I'll go quiet again now and let the thread subside! Mark

That sounds awesome Mark! Very evocative of - er - the Byzantium??

Cheers Julie! I really enjoyed that - it's fun to have to explore a new scale and try and extract some of its flavour. It has the b2 that I think makes me like the Phrygian so much and its got a major 3rd and 7th instead of the flattened 3rd and 7th in Phrygian. Really is a halfway house - it has as many notes from the Major Penatonic scale as it does from the Minor. Lots of note clusters surrounded by larger gaps - a very intersting scale to work with and to improvise around. I think it gives an interesting mix of consonance and dissonance! Mark

OK. I am going to add to my DADGAD video series by showing a few simple tunes that you can develop and elaborate on! As, I've said before this theory stuff can be useful but it is not necessary and it seems to be ending a load of you into a state of panic ;-)

I don't think I've helped the cause of DADGAD at all with this thread - if anything I've maybe wounded it severely.
Some of your usual clarity in a video presentation will hopefully restore the balance!

Mark I've got to say that all this discussion about DADGAD has piqued my interest enough to retune my guitar and try it. Granted that I know no DADGAD specific chord fingerings/shapes, and that I'm playing 'standard' tuning chord fingerings, I'm enjoying the sounds that are coming out! All the regular chord shapes seem to give a nice voicing (whatever the real chords are actually sounding). I like the one finger across all strings sound. And that I can do this and put more fingers down on one or two frets higher and sounds good also. Getting nice chords without my little fingers having to span more than 3 frets. Even Mrs Accrington thinks that the new tuning sounds mysterious and Lindisfarne Dingly Dell' esque !

The theory is a bit beyond me right now but those sound files are to die for, truly beautiful stuff Mark.

I'm pleased that the thread at least encouraged you to try the tuning. A tuning like this that requires little use of the pinkie is great for me, as mine is almost unusable with arthritis except in a very occasional way. The theory is a bit beyond me right now but those sound files are to die for, truly beautiful stuff Mark. Glad you like them Gregg. I'm a bit shocked to see that it was over a year ago that I did this - seems hardly any time. Also shows how hectic this year is - I've had no time for anything like that sort of project this year. Almost no time to even play the guitar. Mark

Interesting thread and fine bit of improv - though I was waiting for Ozzy to start singing about bats at one point. I admire anyone who can understand and apply all this theory. I'm sure I could do it, but it would take a lot more time and effort than a Travis picking pattern on an open C...

Funnily enough I've just last week got bogged down (again) in not being able to get the hang of Travis picking. I hear you playing in that style and am wowed by the result. A big problem for me is that I think I lack the disciplined thought / action that is needed for that style of playing! Mark
