For ages now, I've been trying to work out Nic Jones great instrumental piece - Hamburger Polka - from his "game set and match" album, but can't determine what tuning he's actually used. Anybody got any ideas??? I've tried dropped D, DADGAD, CGCGCE and DGDGBD (all of which I know he's used) but none of them really seem to be quite right for it. Any help would be invaluable.
Thanks, Eric

From a songbook I have (not Nic Jones') here are a list of some of the tunings he used before the car accident...
G major D G D G B D C major C G C G C C G modal D G C G C D G minor D G D G Bb D C modal C G C G C D C minor C G C G C Eb
DADGAD
Throw a capo into the mix as well as he sometimes used one...
Best way to go about it is to try bits of the tune in each tuning and plump with whatever one falls under the fingers easily...
I'll keep looking through my music books & sheaves of scribbled TAB - I did try and work on the Hamburger Polka meself sometime back but gave up...

Just a quick play at guitar for starters, try G modal Capo 3? G modal D G C G C D I've tried little snatches of the tune and it seems to fit...gotta log off now as duty calls... Let us know how you get on with this...

Thanks, Sam, I'll certainly give that one a try. I'll let you know if it works for me.

I've had another play and I am finding that DGDGCD capo 3 falls very nicely under the fingers...

Yes, you're right, Sam - that change from the C to D on 4 does make it slightly easier. I've managed to get the first part loosely sorted, and have now started the second part. Thanks for your help - having that tuning has certainly made it easier.

Hi, i,m new to this site but after reading the comments on the playing of Nic Jones's Hamburger Polka i thought i may be a able to help a bit. If you tune your guitar (from the bottom string) A-F-A-F-A-D you will find you can play along with Nic's recording and work out what he is playing. This may seem a bit low for a tuning but remember Nic always played in open tunings but detuned a tone lower to get his distinct percussive sound.

Hello perkins and a warm to the Forum to you - hope you'll enjoy it here. Maybe you'd like to tell us a little more about yourself/your music/your instrument(s) sometime..? There's a special "Introduce yourself" section if you want to say a quick hello too! keith
