What strings do the Mandolin players on the forum use? I go for John Pearce or D' addario for the guitars.
With two young kids my instrument time is limited. I mainly play guitar but am increasingly being drawn to my Mandolin again. Plus it's easier when we go away for weekends to put the Mandolin case in the boot as it takes up less real estate when competing with the pram and scooter.

Eagle-Newtone Acosutic Traditional Series Phosphor Bronze on my Mandolin. Having said that I'm not sure that I qualify as a Mandolin "player". Mark

A friend of mine who plays Mandolin swears by GHS, whilst DR are also very popular amongst some players.

I use D'Adds, Newtone and even (gasp) Elixir! I tend to mostly use the latter as they do last a long, long time and I detest changing mando strings. The vast majority of my mando playing is plugged in so even the Elixirs sound OK. And, with the double courses they don't seem to have quite the Durex feel that the guitar sets do.

Thanks not a fan of coated strings, just ordered some d'addarios. Neither am I - in fact I detest them on guitar and never use anything but Newtones there. But I was pleasantly surprised when I tried Elixir mando strings on a friends instrument and have used a couple of sets now - two years of plugged in and sweaty handed playing - excellent string life. Wouldn't use them if I only played acoustically though - I'd go with the D'Adds too! Keith

Changing strings on a Mandolin is as much fun as when I had a 12 string guitar.

I use whatever was on the bloody things when I bought them. I have grown to love the 'dead strings' sound...

Our D'Addario Nickel Bronze are proving quite popular for mandolin players. I was at a folk / bluegrass summer school a few weeks ago and the instructors and artists were raving about them which is good!

I've just put a set of D'Addario coated PB on my mandolin. Will have to wait and see how they go over time, but I'm impressed so far. The tone is good and they don't feel noticeably different to the non-coated strings that were on there before.

Newtone from Eagle Music for the De Faoite which has unusual gauges 10-15-20-30 but Eagle sell custom Newtone sets at a reasonable price.
D'Addario EJ74 11-15-26-40 (not the coated or "extended play" version) on an old Gibson. Haven't started experimenting with different strings for that yet, as others have said changing strings on the mando is not something one normally looks forward to! Glad this mando can handle what D'Addario call "medium" strings despite its age. I bought the D'Addarios off ebay.

I went and bought d'addarios and am happy. I alsotook my mandolin to a local builder here in Brisbane (Dunn Mandolins) who did a great set up for me. Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I might try newtones next as I have them on my tricone.

Martin 80/200. Nice "sing" to them, with an even feel that makes for clean chording, very good for folk and jazz stylings. I used to use heavier D'addarios for bluegrass, but can't be bothered now.
