I dropped my car off for service and MOT yesterday and had a couple of hours to spare in Chester. So I decided to enjoy some of the culture and walked along the city wall to the Brewery Tap for lunch. Then I thought I'd check out the local guitar shops. Nothing caught my eye in Dawsons but then I went to Back Alley Music in Northgate....... I picked up a new 'B stock' mahogany top Vintage Gordon Giltrap guitar and played it for over an hour. Very sweet sounding in a range of tunings, particularly the mellow bass tones. The treble tones are not quite as clear / cutting as a Martin but good enough. The neck is wide and chunky and perfect for fingerpicking. I discovered one downside when I got home and put a strap on it - the neck is a bit heavy and tends to droop. It cost £269, including a Kinsman hard shell case which I think is a bargain. It's now at KGB Music in Birkenhead having a new nut (there's enough room to widen the string spacing by 1 or 2 mm) a K&K pickup fitted, and a setup. Iain

A very good value purchase Iain, showing your good taste in the lower budget marketplace! I haven't tried the MGG version, but if it's anything like my VE2000GG, and your description of the sounds suggest it is, it should do you very well. You're wise - it's always a good idea to have a setup done on a Vintage brand guitar. The neck does droop a bit on mine too, but it's difficult to find much fault apart from that. I think it's great that Gordon Giltrap and designer Rob Armstrong gave their time and support to a project that produces a range of great value signature guitars instead of the usual hefty price hikes I see for such things. I hope you have a lot of musical enjoyment together. Mark

Congrats Iain - these are nice guitars - some sensible mods you're making in the widened string spacing and K&K. You'll just have to live with the droop..... Though a suede strap works wonders provided that your shirt or whatever isn't too smooth. Keith
