I am a long time Fylde fan - have owned two Oberons, a Caliban, an Olivia, two Falstaffs and a Leonardo. I am a "big" guitar person - I tune down to C and wanted a big, warm bassed, open sounding guitar and went for the Leonardo as it was the biggest guitar Roger did. I played everything up there before plumping for it and ultimately ended up playing my very battered Falstaff most of the time instead, and returned the Leonardo for resale a year or so later. I haven't found anything quite "big" enough from Fylde. The Falstaff sits in between a recently acquired Gibson slope D (for standard) and a Lowden O size cutaway (for Csus4)

Interesting thoughts gavdav. I have in fact made up my mind based on the Internet ( often unwise, I know), and today I ordered an Orsino from Roger, and he will take the Alex as part of the deal. I just wasn't able to wait until late September, as I know the build might take a year, and I just took the plunge. Anyone with extensive knowledge of the Orsino feel free to chime in. I know it won't make me sound like Nic Jones, but maybe getting me a bit closer..??

I haven't played a bad one - I think they're a really good marriage of body shape and woods (some of the others listed above were quite different - Oberons are wonderful but a very mixed bag (all good but wildly different) in my experience). Hope it pans out for you!

You will certainly love your Orsino dobro. I used to have one in the early 1990s, but sold it - something I have regretted ever since - the only time I've ever sold a guitar and really missed it. But it was the only way I could afford a Lowden! More recently I did a temporary swap with another Forum member - my Ariel for his Orsino, and found this Orsino to be a delight too and was sorry to see it return to it's rightful owner. The original thread of when we did the swap was lost some years ago when a previous incarnation of the Forum disappeared. However, I still had just the review from it as a word doc which I reposted on Acoustic Soundboard a while back - there's vids and audio samples in it - in case you haven't already found it, here it is - acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/793/fylde-orsinoKeith

Thanks gavdav. Always exciting to wait for a new guitar. Before I got the Alex, I had a 1993 Lowden O 10, cedar/mahogany. My friends loved it, but I never bonded with it, not quite sure why. Instrument bonding is a very personal thing, obviously. I like the Alex better, both for strumming and fingerpicking, but I prefer big/long scale, like my Martin D 35.

As some of you might remember, I took delivery of a Fylde Alexander about a year ago, as a 60th birthday gift to myself (quite generous of me, if I may say so). The thing is, this autumn I will be going to Cumbria with some Norwegian traditional folk musicians for a short "pub tour", and will bring my Alex. I am a big guy (1.90 cm), and have come to the conclusion that I'm also a "big guitar-guy", and mostly use a J45 or a D35 at gigs, with the Martin as my go-to. As you have probably guessed, my plan is to take my Alex back home (to Penrith), and politely ask Roger if he would help me sell the Alex if I order another of his models. I also hope to try out guitars at the workshop. I really like the Alex, but would like something a bit bigger. I am a singer-songwriter in the folk-style, and I both strum and fingerpick. I dabble in open tunings, but my default is drop-D. So why this post? Since most of you ladies and gents on this forum are in GB, I guess some of you might have some experience with other Fyldes ( I have read O'Carolan's reviews with admiration and interest), but would like those of you in the know to chime in with whatever you like.Needless to say, I really look forward to the Cumbria trip, and GAS has again taken it's hold of me, and taken me in it's clutch, a feeling I would think many of my forumites are acquainted with. So: Which Fylde model would you recommend for a big (in a strictly physical sense) Norwegian singer songwriter using both a 1mm plectrum and a thumbpick (not at the same time) ? So with this, I wish all of you an excellent summer, with loads of acoustic bliss. Regards, John Hi Dobro... I don't know how much your heart is set on a Fylde, but I'm currently looking to sell a lovely Lowden 010 (cedar/mahogany) (which absolutely loves open tunings!)with a Fishman Rare Earth pickup, if that would be of any interest to you? Best wishes, Martin
