In January this year we were faced with pulling the plug on the ceilidh band because we couldn't get reliable sound for wedding gigs. I took the decision to step up and buy the PA and run it from the stage. I also intend to be putting myself out there as a PA hire and sound guy. I do have enough experience and knowledge to be dangerous, so I've purposely bought good gear to make it as easy as it can be, with the only exception being that we're using stage wedges instead of in-ears, at least for now.
It's a risk, but I'm looking at it from a business perspective and it's something that I will enjoy doing, unlike my current job!
My risk-taking attitude seemed to start when my mum died a year ago. KT Tunstall talked about this concept in her address at Oxford Union, something in Japanese Zen Buddhism known as Satori. She experienced it also on the death of a parent, and it was interesting to hear her talking about it.
Anyway, back to the PA. We're a five-piece acoustic band and I've been live mixing our weekly gigs in a local bistro. Weddings are generally in village halls, so I'll be stepping up my game big time!
The heart of the PA is a PreSonus StudioLive 16 Series III and a pair of PreSonus ULT15 powered speakers. The desk has network connectivity so I can hook up a wireless access point and mix with an iPad in the middle of the room. I've ordered a Line6 Relay G70 for my two guitars so I can do my own FOH mix wirelessly too. I have two PreSonus Air10s to use as monitors or as FOH for smaller gigs, and my old Red5 Audio 15" speakers will also be used as monitor duty for the bigger halls.
The one thing I haven't settled on is lighting. I know absolutely nothing about lighting and don't really know where to start. Anyone got any ideas?
It's a scary venture with lots of details to consider. The first gig is in a hotel on 1 August, then another in the island's biggest village hall on 5 August. Wish me luck!
