About time I posted Ken on this Forum. Two lovely waltzes -
Great player and top bloke.

Definitely seconded on the 'top player' comment, although I only know him from videos.
Dave White was kind enough to share an accurate (and long) transcription he did of Ken Nicol's DADGAD 'Scottish tune' with me a couple of years ago, and it's a lovely tune to play.
Frustrating, too: there is what I think is a F#7 chord voicing in one of the transitions which is a bitch to hit with both left and right hand (it's one of those 'swap all fingers from one side to the other' shapes in a quarter note timing), so I have even more respect for Ken's ability to make everything seem natural, smooth and effortless.

I know what you mean about that change Kym!
This was the first tune that I worked out in DADGAD and Ken's vid was so clear it wasn't too much trouble, despite the (for me) unfamiliar tuning. I posted my attempt at it on the Forum in 2010 played on Dave's first Road Trip Guitar, which, as I recall, prompted Dave to transcribe it from the video.
It was a combination of Dave's guitar and Ken's gorgeous tune that finally tipped me over the edge into DADGAD, having spent many years avoiding it!

Ha! It's like, so modal! Open!
For me the big seduction into DADGAD was 'Bird Song' on Rosemary Lane. All those little bubbling and sliding bits, and then Bert's gruff voice over the top of it, apparently singing a much simpler song.

I saw him in Shaw a few years ago with Phil Cool who is a good friend of his - great night and what a player he is. I bought Initial Variations CD and Dave has sent me IH tab but I think too hard for me.
Enjoyed these pieces Keith.

Ha! It's like, so modal! Open! ........................................ Kym It sure is dude! btw, I'm not personally acquanted with Ken, though have had interesting chats with him at gigs, and he has been v heplful via email on a few occasions when I've been otherwise unable to obtain a particular CD. He seems v modest and unassuming and always happy to talk guitar geek stuff! Proper gentleman. Must have a bash sometime at the other waltz I posted too, though I might give the slightly weird middle bit a miss.... Keith

Phi I saw Ken with with Phil Cool too - a lovely evening altogether, which even Mrs O'C thoroughly enjoyed. Phil, IMHO the TAB, excellent though it undoubtedly is, makes IH look harder than it actually is. My general feeling about TAB is that it makes perfect sense once you can play the tune anyway! Get the tune inside your head and a an idea of the feel of the arrangement. Most of it is not easpecially hard. Go with your ears and what you see on the video, and if necessary refer to the TAB for the odd bit you really can't figure out. Listen to the tune at least 20 or more times before you start, figure out the sectional structure of it, then work on just a section at a time from the video - if you can hum the tune, and can also hear what's going on underneath it you'll get there. The hardest part is making a start - believe you can do it and you will. I have no doubt at all that you are capable of working this one out if you really want to. Keith

Kym Hallo, I'm beginning to play fingerpicking guitar in DADGAD and I like so much this song of Ken Nicol, Scottish tune. Can anyone help me to find or to have tablature or sheet-music. Do you have it? Thanks you so much in advance. I'm an Italian and I'm discovering your scottish and irish daydreaming tunes!!!

Hi quentin79 and welcome to the Forum. You have great taste in guitar players/pieces! As you may have gathered from reading the older part of this thread I love this tune too - it really is not too hard to work out from Ken's video - I managed it as a DADGAD novice and avoider, so give it a go! If you get totally bogged down, then you might message davewhite , who as Kym said above has transcribed this one - maybe he still has it somewhere....? Anyway, hope you enjoy the Forum, and look forward to hearing from you again. Keith

A fine player and singer. He used to do quite a few solo pub gigs in north Lancashire when not on tour, so I have seen him many times. Seems a really nice chap too. Always liked his "sound". He seems to be one of those recognisable-by-ear players.
