Hiya,
Looking for recommends from folk who have strung up a small-bodied guitar Nashville stylee. Am thinking of investing in a little guitar for stringing like this for recording and possibly gigging with further down the line (after fitting a K&K, natch).
Budget £250 max. Will be looking at the usual suspects, but there may be something that someone on here has tried with this tuning/string guage that has worked particularly well and I'd be very interested to hear about that. I'm not looking to get the best looking guitar... this would purely be a tool. Sound/performance in Nashville tuning is what I'm most interested in.
If anyone has tried a Gretsch Jim Dandy in Nashville I'd be particularly keen to hear about that.

I have a Vintage parlour V880N which I picked up for less than £120 with a padded gig bag and guitar stand, used but in 'as new' condition. I shaved the saddle a little and it's a fantastic guitar. I don't know about tuning it to Nashville but it has a truss rod should should be okay and it wouldn't cost the earth to find out (the K&K would probably cost as much).

I have a Vintage V300 mahogany version which is tuned a minor third up - terz tuning. Chimes beautifully.
It wass only £99 as the shop was clearing out. They can usually be found new from £150-£180 ish.
Mine needed the usual truss rod/nut/saddle fettling, but works well now. Nut is too narrow, but I only use it with capo 2, 4 and up so the neck is wider there anyway.

Thanks earthbalm and ocarolan - I will definitely be giving Vintage a look along with Sigma, Recording King, Gretsch etc. I don't won't to fall into the trap of going in to the next price bracket to get a "better" guitar for what I see as a niche purpose. I'm still hankering over a Gretsch Style II for a "nice" parlour sized guitar, but not as a thing to leave in Nashville all the time. I'll be looking on fleabay, etc too. I once tried an Art & Lutherie Ami in Nashville tuning and it sounded brilliant... unfortunately you don't see them around these days and they are over £300 too.

Well I'd never heard of Nashville tuning! Can anyone link a YouTube vid of a performance using it?

Well I'd never heard of Nashville tuning! Can anyone link a YouTube vid of a performance using it? It's basically the thinest six strings from a 12 string set put on a six string guitar. It's an old recording trick to put a nashville tuned guitar over a regular six string to "fatten" the sound. Sounds pretty damn cool over another guitar but nothing special on it's own.

Well I never. I must have a dabble. I found these, cheaper than a 12 string set. I've ordered some to try out on my old Guild.

I've tried it a few times over the years on "spare guitars" but these were always big guitars. I got the idea from Stefan Grossman at one of his gigs years ago.. he called it "high strung" rather than Nashville. Conventional wisdom states that, although you can Nashville any 6 string, you are best to use a bright guitar with not much bass response... hence my quest.

Tried out a whole bunch of wee guitars today. I've already fallen into the trap of playing ones outwith my price range... d'oh!!! Pick o' the bunch was a wee 2nd hand Sigma 00M-15 mahogany/sapele guitar at £189. So that and a new Gretsch Jim Dandy are the current front-runners. I was also recommended a Sigma 00MSE, which they are waiting to arrive at one of the shops. It comes with an onboard pickup system, which might make it a good option at only £249 new.
Just annoying that I'm gonna have to to take a punt without being able to hear the guitar with its intended tuning.

You'll probably need to provide the strings and maybe change them yourself, but if you're pretty sure there's maybe two it's between then they really should let you give it a try..... Keith

Keith Actually, they might in one of the shops, but unlikely in the other one as most of the guitars are commission sales.

Stringy, I have a little Cort L900p that I no longer play. It’s cedar over rosewood, I think. They don’t make them any more but we’re about 500 quid when they did. I’d be prepared to let it go for 250, and you can have it for a while on appro if you like. I’m not desperate to flog it, but it’s just taking up space.
