I've been on the AGF for some years, but quite a lot this year because I've been having cancer treatment and recovering. So, unable to do anything much, I've been sitting at the keyboard and trying to help folks with various questions.
So far I've been "banned" twice, by one moderator, because my writing "don't give a ****"- I mean literally four asterisks because using a word like damn can get you reprimanded - so I got a PM accusing me of "profanity".
Most recently I was banned for two weeks because I was accused on being "Nationalistic" ....don't even know what that means to this one mod, but to me it implies being extreme right wing, which is certainly not me, and as politics are taboo, I could not have made any such statements.
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.

I think most of us have been/are members on AGF but find it too much as you experienced and prefer to hang out here instead.

Hi Andy - sorry to hear you've been unwell - wishing you quick and complete recovery! I occasionally look in on AGF, and even less often actually post, but haven't been curmudgeonly enough to be banned there yet. I don't think the Merkins really understand the Brit sense of humour ... and probably the reverse is also true to some extent anyway. I'll try very hard not to ban you here though. Do you want to join the Curmudgeonly old Gits section? Just a bit of a laugh really, but gives you access to an otherwise hidden section where you can rant (reasonably politely anyway,to your heart's content. Keith Keith

I'm trying to imagine how you could be "nationalistic" purely in regard to guitars. Did you express an opinion that Lowden make better instruments than Froggy Bottom, or start too many threads about Richard Thompson? I was pretty regular on the AGF for a short while (in fact I'm sure you & I had conversations over there). I had a couple of things deleted without explanation - one wasn't all that surprising as it was a joke about working the crowd in a faith band, although in my defence it was posted in response to a moderator's joke about working the crowd in a faith band. The other was a pretty innocuous silly comment in an otherwise rather dry thread about under saddle pickups, or bracing patterns, or something equally well trodden. Once I realised having a sense of humour was discouraged I lost interest, although I still occasionally pop back if I need to ask something.

Speaking as a Brit who lives on the other side of the Atlantic I can confirm that the US sense of humor (if there is such a thing) is "different" and you have to try quite hard to avoid offending any groups that might potentially be offended. As a result, slapstick and self-deprecating humor rules. Everything else: proceed with caution. Julie

Good luck with the recovery Andy. I had a warning that I would be banned for including `Trumps the president, what the hell` in my signature, as I had been political and used a profanity!! A trump supporting Mod maybe.

Yep, was there for a little while, but got tired of not feeling like a proper acoustic guitar player because I didn't always prefer top-end Martins.

A trump supporting Mod maybe. Well, for not including an apostrophe in "Trump's" and no question mark at the end... I'm with AGF on this one

I can understand the need for forum 'no religion, no politics' rules, but then there are all the people with cringingly soppy faith-based signatures that I find to be the equivalent of the people who wake you up early on weekend mornings by knocking at the door to give you little pamphlets.
There's a section at the bottom of the main page where people who really, really love guns post, too. I stumbled across this by accident one day, and particularly liked a story from a guy in an open carry state who was complaining about how twice he'd had his expensive weapons stolen from his car and he wasn't going to put up with it.
I do enjoy the endless wittering about 'runout tops', return policies for factory guitars and other discussions that prove that the customer is always right.

On AGF Martin Simpson comes from Sxxxxhorpe. I’m not joking! That would be the Sxxxxhorpe that's twinned with Pxxxstone then... Keith

As a result, slapstick and self-deprecating humor rules. That's interesting - a friend of mine who's genuinely very good, came back from a US tour a couple of years back & told me they don't understand self-depreciating humour. It would seem his 'slightly inept' between-songs stage persona had been taken at face value at a number of gigs...

Isn't Fliss still mod at AGF? haven't been there for years and not intending to go back. Who needs AGF, anyway...

HI curmudgeon. Hope you are making a full recovery. I'm a member of AGF but never log in and only visit to drool over the pictures in the "Custom Shop". The luthiers featured on this forum are more than capable of building equally stunning guitars but in the USA they seem to be able to (more easily) obtain far more stunning timber!? Please note - absolutely no disrespect meant to anybody on either end of the Atlantic.
