I've been busy this week recording videos and starting a blog - all the things I wish I knew when I was starting on the guitar and all the things that make playing more pleasurable for me today. Students regularly record the exercises I've devised and that we use... so I thought I'd better do it properly. There is so much out there on that there evil interweb, I thought I'd try not to repeat the obvious. It is classical based, but all good technique is relevant to any style of playing. I'll cover, amongst other things, holding the guitar; tuning the guitar; hand positions; nails; finger exercises for synchronisation, finger independence and legato; stretching; melody playing; tasto and ponticello; harmonics; rest stroke, especially on the ring finger; barré chords; vibrato... I'm sure lots of it can be taken with a pinch of salt! Guitar Basics blogCheers Jonny

Oooh that's good stuff Jonny, and very well presented. Excellent stuff! (apart from the Merkin style dates that is!) Looking forward to more. Keith Love the product placement!

Thanks for looking Keith. I wondered why the date looked a bit odd, now the right way round!
The kitchen is the only room not full of boxes for our move oop north... I had to turn the fridge off for the recordings and forgot to turn it back on a few times.

Great lessons Jonny - haven't seen that method of tuning before so I'm busy trying it! Julie

Thanks Julie. There are other similar methods, Eric Roche's in 'The Guitar Bible' is notoriously complicated, mine is a simplified version for us mere mortals. I'll be posting a new video everyday. Today's is on creating good tone and nailcare. Tone: nailsJonny

Thanks Jonny, already shortcutted onto my desktop. I particularly like ... the length of each video is within my boredom threshold; they are clean with nothing showy or fancy; purpose is clearly stated and fulfilled; no technical jargon or heavy theory (yet?). I have already noted 2 things to practice. Only constructive criticism (very mild) is that a bit more volume would be good and text overlay of names of things like the guitar support on the 'holding' video.
Great stuff, look forward to my daily dose.

I'm not sure about the sound, perhaps use headphones. Thanks for looking earthbalm and OO7. Mrs Mosco reckons I should post weekly rather than daily as when I get into the exercises, there would be time to practise them - however, they are not sequential and lots are complementary to each other. What's the consensus? Jonny

Once a week... I've no reason to believe you'd run out of material but why risk it?

I'll go for once a week, but some of the vids are more useful tips and not a major workout, so for those cases I may post more than one a week.
Just editing some more, hopefully helpful and not too controversial.

Very nice and very helpful. If you are using a mac check out Screenflow which allows you do do things like zoom in on a fretboard position. Most of us use relatively high def pictures now and it is amazing what detail can be revealed!

Thanks Andy. I'll check out Screenflow, I use Premiere Pro and shall zoom in if it will help.

This is great, Jonny! Good luck with it, and I'll need to get in touch about classical guitar anyway as I haven't lifted a finger since I 'started again'
