Here's an exercise to help with playing smoothly. Hope it helps. Jonny

It's easy to take for granted playing a chord with the thumb, it's so simple, what could go wrong? This video looks at a technique enabling a melody note to be played on the top string as part of a chord. Controlling the weight and pressure of the thumb on the strings is difficult though, so persevere!

Merci Gregg! Here's the second part to arpeggiating chords, this time using thumb and fingers (quite a useful technique, takes a while to develop... focus on a evenness). Cheers Jonny

Here's a simple technique that is really useful to stop bass notes ringing on beyond their written value to avoid muddiness. Just out of interest... has anybody tried any of the exercises and noticed they've helped? Cheers Jonny

Not, not in the way you mean. But I do recognise them all as good technique much of which I’ve absorbed over the years (not that you’d notice by listening to my stuff)
I do think for somebody starting out of just taking it all seriously - these are great posts. Keep going!

Cheers Andy, for the encouraging words. Here's something for everyone, no matter what style: how to make the most of your practise time. I cover a lot... I forgot to mention the special corner set aside especially, but did include the best time of day - evening for me (I'm not a morning person). Jonny

There are a few more to come on the most efficient way to practise a piece... perhaps I'll put them up later in the week.

why do all of your excercises look far more simple than they actually are ?!?! Jonny, when I (try to) do triplets on the the b string I slightly shift the angle of the wrist. would that make sense here, too?

why do all of your excercises look far more simple than they actually are ?!?! Jonny, when I (try to) do triplets on the the b string I slightly shift the angle of the wrist. would that make sense here, too? A right angle (the hand to the strings) may result in a more even tremolo and a straight wrist will help with freedom of movement for the fingers. If you mean the hand is angled in a bit when looking down at it and that helps with missing the top E string with the fingers, then perhaps it would make sense. Slow, methodical repetition (and probably being a bit OCD) helps with the exercises. The examples I gloss over at the beginning of this vid aren't basic, just what came into my head as random examples. I'm sure lots of people would say just have fun with it, but to be honest, hard work and dedication is involved... ultimately it pays off and is incredibly rewarding and results in fulfilling music's aim to communicate (what? is for another time perhaps). Jonny
