I have had a classical guitar for 2 years but I hardly play it, its in a gig bag in the cupboard, thinking in fact of selling it. The problem is I lack the time or discipline to learn to play authentic classical music, so I feel that I shouldn't play it-its a classical guitar so one should play classical music on it or not at all. But is that true? Why do I feel that if I dont play in the classical style that I shouldn't have a classical guitar? Are there many on here that don't play classical music at all on their nylon strung guitar?

Yes. I can't play Classical Guitar. But nylon strings sound different from steel, and I like that softness and dynamic for some songs.

My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

Leonard Cohen made a whole career out of playing non-classical music on a nylon string

I saw this chap at Salisbury Jazz Festival in the late 90s - demonstrating there's much more you can do with a nylon string than 'just' classical. Not that I would have known the difference between a nylon & steel stringed guitar in those days. Funnily enough though, although there are plenty of nylon string players whose music I enjoy, I must admit I've never really found myself tempted for a nylon string guitar. I think the fact you can't really play slide on them may have always been the deal breaker

Jake Thackray sang his ditties accompanying himself with a nylon strung guitar. They're nicer on the fingers apparently.

I was thinking of getting a baritone ukulele you see. Its tuned DGBE, like the top 4 strings of a guitar, linear tuning. They sound fabulous!

Ironically, some of the greatest music written for the classical guitar was composed on a steel string by Barrios.

I often think of getting a nylon stringer to indulge my Jerry Reed, Buster Jones, Richard Smith fantasies (that's fantasies about being able to play and sound like them), but so far I've resisted. I know in my heart that it'll take more than a new guitar. No compulsion to play classical pieces though, much as admire those who can and do.

There's always flamenco rather than pure classical. Has the advantage of being more free form and being open to improvisation and interpretation.
But I'll admit to having a (small size) classical guitar that really doesn't get used as much as it should. I am reminded I'm supposed to be working on getting something better together on the flamenco genre.
It has been useful sometimes on multi track recordings as a contrast, particularly on lead lines.

Interestingly classical guitars made for flamenco tend to have a thinner top for less sustain and a sharper, snappier sound.

Interestingly classical guitars made for flamenco tend to have a thinner top for less sustain and a sharper, snappier sound. Often a spruce top for flamenco guitars while classical are more often cedar. The spruce helps the fast percussive attack. Mark
