Hi folks, some of you will know of, or have been to the Halsway Manor guitar weekends I've run in the past. As the result of major renovation at the building and resultant summer closure, there isn't a convenient weekend slot next year. Rather than the sunny July weekend we've had in the past, it is looking like being in mid October - making things even more interesting is we're looking at a week - i.e. working week so less convenient of those of us with day-jobs, and longer than the two days we've had before. I'm just giving a heads up as I start to shape the event here - I would love to know who you'd like to see as tutors - it all comes down to availability and cost - but some suggestions of people who have been great at other events or offer something different. I'd always like to have gender balance - so suggestions of great female teachers and players also welcome.
I'll be shaking the format up - with longer to work, we'll build in key periods for working together and a final performance opportunity, with some shared repertoire for all tutors and students to have a go at.
I had brilliant suggestions from people last year, and would love to hear your ideas for next year.
cheers
Gav

Oooh, exciting! This sounds great, Gav. For a variety of reasons mid Oct might not be the easiest for me, but will do my level best to be able to attend - would love to know exact dates as soon as available. Maybe Sid Goldsmith and Jimmy Aldridge could do guitarry/banjoey/songwritery/harmony singy workshops? Would be great to have Ben Walker back again, esp if Josie could come too, and make some singing input. Actually any of the previous people would go down v well again I'm sure. Ange Hardy would be fab. Forum member slidingwolf (sorry if I'm speaking out of turn here, Martin!) does an excellent slide guitar workshop - blues orientated, but judicious slide can add so much to all kinds of music. And there are, of course, several instrument makers of our acquaintance who might be prepared to show off their talents.... I'll give this some more thought! Nice one Gav,all the best for the planning! Keith

Mid October might not be good for me either Last year we came back from Spain on the 17th so pushing it back to nearer the end would probably mean I could go otherwise I may have to miss it which would be a shame. I swapped a few emails with Rachel Hill at Halsway earlier in the year and she said the dates were either Option 1: Fri 9 – Sun 11 Nov or Option 2: Mon 12 – Fri 16 Nov which would suit me much better although I didn't really fancy the 5 day one. Look forward to hearing when the confirmed dates are with more details gavdav Phil

Gav, Sounds exciting. Barring unforeseen events such as new grandchildren arrivals, midweek October suits me for Halsway. For singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Tilston would be good (plus you have Kate and you ). For fingerstyle guitar Clive Carroll and Ed Boyd spring to mind. If I have any more thoughts I'll let you know.

If you understand what causes it, I suspect that new grandchildren is not entirely unforeseeable

Ian Stephenson - great player and a great teacher. And Johnny Dickinson, Johnny can teach folk more about getting "feel" into their music than anyone I know.

+ 1 for Ian Stephenson. How about Brooks Williams?
Consider going beyond 'just guitar playing' to include maybe singing? / songwriting? performance tips?

You're right, Reg Meuross did a songwriting course this year. Hopefully he'll do another next year

I have just been looking on the Halsway Manor what's on section to see if the guitar weekend had been re-scheduled later in the year which they informed me by email was going to happen.
Expecting a big gap in the summer for renovations I was surprised to see it full of events all through the year with no guitar content which is a shame. In addition there is no apparent closure for the aforementioned renovation which they told me was the reason the usual guitar weekend date had been replaced with the "more profitable ukelele and song weekend".
All seems a bit strange and I'm not sure but it seems likely to be profit driven I suspect.

Ooh, well, I will check in with them - I had thought they were closing for July and August in order to have the HLF funded renovations carried out.

No Gavin? Unfortunately will be in Spain. Miss it by a week but not sure 4 nights would suit me anyway because it seems a tad too long. Shame they didn't leave it as previous years. Never mind. Phil

Hi folks - due to a significant personal event in the autumn, I'm not able to do the revised dates this year - but I just wanted to reassure anyone who is interested (or cares) that this is not the result of any falling out, and I had booked Kevin and Charlotte who I rate very highly based on some unscientific polling, and suggested Tristan as an alternative host. I will keep in touch with Rachel and let you know if there are plans to return to the weekend format for 2019 - feedback and comments form you guys always helps!
