I've just bought a new case that's a little too big for may mandolin which is a little smaller than average so the case is a little to large. What's the best way to ensure that the instrument stays safe? A piece of foam behind the tailpiece? It's about "two fingers" too long.

I bought a case a few years ago that I knew wasn't the exact fit, I think I ordered it direct from Hiscox. They provided foam wrapped in the same material as the case inside, it did the job.
If you know a source for the material and know some en who is handy with a sewing machine I am sure you could come up with something that is functional and looks oK.
Foam on its own will get dirty and bits will start to fall off over time.

Foam of various grades is widely available - often at market stalls - otherwise a suede strap with no metal or plastic bits folded over a couple of times plus or minus a soft polishing cloth might do the job, at least in the short term.

Both of the above solutions will work, but it's something that always bothers me with non standard instruments. There is a very good case maker in Dublin called Mike Mullen who I have used several times, unfortunately he is so good and basically, one of a kind these days he's always busy and also trying to retire.

Thanks, I think a custom case will be out of my budget and possibly cost as much as the mandolin did

"You'll grow into them..."
at least that's what my mum used to say when she made sure there was two fingers space in my school shoes!

I think what you’re trying to tell me is that I should buy another mandolin that will fit the case and then find a case that fits the current one. P.S. Enjoying your album!

Ha, yeah something like that! I had a similar problem with my little Martin 5-17t - in the end I bought the smallest hiscox case and then some cushion foam and just stuck the foam in the gap - it’s not pretty but it worked and still works four years later! Thanks for saying you’re enjoying the album!

I've used one of those chamois covered foam blocks that are intended for demisting car windscreens

I use an old pair of socks to pad out one of cases for my flamenco... the thread reminded me of this and now I've changed them for some foam that came with a BAM case, less smelly!
