scorpiodog Thanks What's the battery life like on the Blackstar? And can you plug in an regular external power supply or does it use a proprietary socket? The price of the genuine one is about the same as the amplifier! I have found mine has a pretty good battery life (which, of course, depends a lot on how much you use it and the volume level). I have the Blackstar power supply, but I guess as long as it's rated properly and has the correct polarity, you can use a non-proprietary power supply. According to tonywoods (who has a grasp on technology that I can only dream of) there's no reason not to use a correctly rated power supply on virtually anything. Unfortunately the Blackstar uses a weird power supply connector so that you WILL BUY their overpriced power supply. Battery life is very good though you should get about 10 hrs or so out of a set of reasonable alkaline batteries. Probably one of the best little amps that's not in a biscuit tin.

I am desolate at having given you poor advice, Onechordtrick. Trust me, tonywoods is the guru.

Thanks, I suspected that was likely to be the case otherwise they'd never sell any of their power supplies

I've done some Googling and found the PSU more cheaply now at £13 rather than the £40+ that I originally saw so it doesn't seem that extortionate now! But no one has it in stock My amp is due tomorrow so I'll see what battery life is like. As predicted upgrade-itis set in and I fitted a new pickup yesterday. Even with a headphone amp it's night and day difference, louder, more balanced across the strings and way better tone.

scorpiodog thanks for the recommendation. My Blackstar arrived yesterday and does just what I was hoping for: great through headphones - far better than the plug I device I had which will be relegated to travel use and great for letting rip when I have the house to myself. Clean give some just the sound I want and the overdrive, well, fun!

I have one of these. They have a headphone socket. The tone controls (can I really call it eq?) are reasonable, and it's perfectly loud enough for home use. I think they're good value. Use nickel strings rather than phosphor bronze, and you may wish to experiment with flatwounds. They cut sustain (but it's an electric so that's no bad thing) but eliminate string squeak which becomes more pronounced as you amplify. Lovely looking Mando, by the way. It actually came supplied with Phosphor Bronze strings I'd have expected Thomann to know better. Just fitted some nickel ones, way better sound! Of course those of you who a brighter than me - so all of you - would have noticed immediately....

Not to derail this too much, but I've just started going electric again after selling my gear last year, and have picked up a very cheap amp. Is this any good? Got it for £25 Kustom HV30 'High Voltage' Hybrid 30W 1x12" Amp
