Our duo (Mrs b and I) occasionally expands into a quartet called North Face. We're already extremely popular - you'll no doubt have seen lots of folk wearing clothing and footwear bearing our logo.... When we are/were a duo, we put two mics and one guitar through our Acus One 8 (we do small club/cafe gigs). I absolutely love this amp: three channels (two XLR/jack and one jack only input, each with three band EQ). We're frequently told what a great sound it is. FYI one of my Lowdens has a K&K and the other a Fishman Rare Earth Blend. We don't generally use a preamp (even for the K&K). For the larger ensemble we want to add capacity for the Acus to handle another instrument and more mics, one vocal and one or even our matched pair of Rode NTs for unpickupped instruments. So my question is, how could we achieve this for a reasonable price and without compromising sound quality? We really don't want to start adding more amps and speakers as we've both the days of lugging a vanful of gear around well and truly behind us.

Small mixer with eg 4 XLR/jack inputs?

What Keith said. Get some leads made up so you can put the mixer into the phono inputs of the amp, that way you don’t use up any of your instrument or mic channels. Acus do a small mixer, but may be more expensive. Otherwise Behringer probably have one that will do the job nicely.

Thanks guys. I have this cheap and not particularly cheerful Behringer mixer (the 3 channel Acus mixer is a cool £599). When I've run instruments through it there's definitely a drop in sound quality, but I'll try @robbiej 's suggestion, which at least leaves the rest of the amp channels unadulterated. The output is a 1/4" TRS Jack so would this be the right cable? As you might have guessed I know absolutely zilch about electronics (I blame Mr Swinswood Keith )

No, I don’t think, that is what you want Andy P. When they say TRS, that usually means it is a balanced output. It is only taking one channel. It’s instead of having an XLR output. What you need is either: A stereo jack to mono phono lead (two of these)- plug these into either the control room outputs or the other main outputs Or just an ordinary hi if set of photos and take it out of that phone output on the right of the mixer Hope this makes sense. I get cables made up by design a cable. This is what you want if you take the first option: www.designacable.com/pseudo-balanced-rca-phono-to-trs-jack-lead-pair-van-damme-starquad-cable.htmlDo you know that Acus also make a whole series of extension speakers should you require it in the future? Thanks @robbiej , I think that makes sense to me, although the Behringer blurb states that the output is unbalanced. Would that make a difference to option one? So the phono leads would go into the inputs for channel 4 of the amp, right?
I'd love one of those extension cabinets but I don't have a spare £548 just now (that's the Thomann price).

A mono jack in the TRS socket of your mixer output will work fine.
I'd be tempted to simply use a normal jack lead in just (eg) the R main output from the mixer and take it to the jack input channel 3 on the Acus (unless you desperately need that for something else). Saves a lot of faff. Just remember to pan the mixer channels fully R and all will be well.
I remember Mr Swinswood talking about seduction. It was in an analogy for induction, but I can't remember all the ins and out of it....

Thanks Keith. The question is would there be an advantage in terms of sound quality in going the way Robbie suggests? If so then it's worth £40 for the lead and it frees up the third channel on the amp.

Andy P - Sound quality should be similar either way, Andy. But with the addition of the mixer do you need channel 3 on the amp? If you really do, then going into the phono channel on the Acus is obvs the thing to do. But in that case it's simplest to use the phono outs (record out) from the mixer with a normal phono-phono to phono-phono lead. No adapters or special leads needed. Keith

Thanks Keith, that works a treat Mr Swinswood wrote on my report that I worked little and cared less, which wasn't strictly true: I neither worked nor cared at all. I never "got" Physics from the moment in Year One lesson one when he wrote on the blackboard "Light is a rectalinear propagation".
