Andy has been singing the praises of Headway preamps for quite a while. I needed something to increase the gain on my passive pickup guitars (the RedEye makes it sound better but has no volume/gain) and after talking things over with the very nice guy at Headway, I decided to try out the EDB-2. I bought this model over the cheaper single input EDM or EDB-1 as I wanted to see if it would work as a mini-mixer. It's intended to mix an instrument mic and pickup together. I use a vocal preamp and running it into the XLR works very well. I'm running the output from the EDB-2 straight into my Yamaha speaker and not using my Soundcraft mixer at all.
I am really impressed with how good my guitars sound, and even though I haven't messed with the notch filter yet, I can turn the volume up higher than usual without any feedback. I'll be using it at my first noisy pub gig tomorrow night where there have been some feedback issues in the past, so am looking forward to seeing how it goes. It's a much simpler/smaller set-up and although I do eventually want to figure out how to use my mixer properly, I am relieved to not have to use it tomorrow night!
My only complaint is that it's a fairly expensive unit and I think it should come with some kind of little padded gig bag. The cardboard box it comes in is a bit big to be hauling around to gigs. Aside from that, I am very impressed and would seriously recommend this box to anyone needing a good preamp!

I can't believe how well this worked as a little mixer. The sound was brilliant and I cut 15 mins off my setup/take down time, and not a hint of feedback!

I can't believe how well this worked as a little mixer. The sound was brilliant and I cut 15 mins off my setup/take down time, and not a hint of feedback! Sound is the most important thing. I have mine in a tough plastic flight case thing in which you can cut out the foam for our own stuff — cameras or whatever. My case can carry the preamp, two vocal mics and one small condenser. However, most of the time I simply have it in the compartment of my Hiscox case. A few important things — as settings can alter. Always check you preferred dial in eq — use the notches on the pots as they are so small. Also, check the impedance setting — this makes a big difference. Mine is always set to Active but Im always surprised at how it has somehow moved — it had yesterday. Richard Knott was with us yesterday and he'd brought along the small Headway (single input) preamp. I'd forgotten how good it sounded. Am gonna get mine out for more simple gigs when I can run on phantom. SaveSave
