Had a pleasant surprise the other day. I had a meeting out near Guitar Guitar and nothing much to do after. On approach the store seems to haver moved a few units along. I popped into the new store which was about the size of the old one. I could see electrics and PAs but no acoustics. They still have the old store which is now purely acoustic.
The new acoustic store is huge and has a wonderful calm and relaxed atmosphere. There's no danger of Smoke on the Water riffs driving over here. the staff are keen acoustic players and the one guy I talked a lot to was a very decent country blues player. He told me their idea was to be able to stock a decent range of everything, even the high end guitars.
There were guitars right from very cheap to very expensive. The new Guilds were featured prominently and there was tons of Martins and Taylor's and a decent number of Gibsons. Also, there are a couple of Waterloo Guitars and a number of Lowdens (including lefties).
I have to say this looks a superb initiative. This is possibly the biggest acoustic guitar store now in the country and quite probably one of the very best. If you are within striking distance of Brum it is well worth checking out.
Did anything catch my eye?
There were two lovely L 00 Gibson, both great, fund instruments to play although they sounded very new and very tight. Both were out gunned by a lovely spruce and maple Waterloo — they really have nailed that old time Gibson blues sound. I also very much liked a redwood and cocobolo O Lowden — wonderful neck and proper decent spring spacing. As ever – not quite sure about the sound though. They apparently have three of the Bush Mills series which might be an interest to collectors. We had a chat about that. Collectors will take them. Guitar Guitar will not even put them on display, but if you are interested they have them!
