Whaaaat! You mean that there is some kind of theory that underpins this guitar playing mullarkey. Personally I just twang a few strings....if said twang sounds nice then I try to remember it and maybe use it again. If twang sounds horrible then I generally try not to play it again (or call it Jazz).
However....using this 'system' is prolly the reason why my guitar playing repertoire is so limited!!

That's all very well but what happens when you get to eight? Is it like when you get to the end of the world, you just fall off? (to be fair Keith did say start again, I'm just being silly )

In fairness, you do it all the time when you play chords probably without thinking. A shuffle using 6ths and 7ths, for example or even a major triad using 1 3 and 5.
