I used to go to Slapton Sands when I was a kid. The beach falls away very steeply, one minute you're in shallow water, the next minute you're in deep water. It's shingle not sand - just in case you wanted to know. Thought The times they are a changin' was interesting (You been away Phil? )

The Folk on Foot podcast with him was very interesting as well. As for Slapton, it is still the case that the notices on the beach still don't tell that story properly.

I noticed his Wikipedia entry says he has “a spare picking style”...

Great to see a Sobell back on show. This is a very informative interview with several things i've not heard discussed before. Thanks for posting, Phil Taylor .

Great to see a Sobell back on show. This is a very informative interview with several things i've not heard discussed before. Thanks for posting, Phil Taylor . When I saw him at Cropredy in the summer he was using two guitars. For the first half of the set he used this Sobell and for the second half he used a new Fylde. Both seemed to be used in his normal selection of tunings.

I noticed his Wikipedia entry says he has “a spare picking style”... I bet that was his own description. Many years ago he advised me to play less notes. I attempt to di this with greater effect every year. But I have noticed he doesn't always follow his own advice!

I enjoyed it too but at times the way he speaks and smiles puts me in mind if David Brent...... Phil I know what you mean! Years ago - before he went to the USA - I thought him quite an arrogant bastard. At Cropredy he was puzzling as to why it had taken then so long to invite him. He joked that he might have upset them in the 80’s - he repeated this at the end! I can imagine that he might well have done - David Brent style :-)

I noticed his Wikipedia entry says he has “a spare picking style”... I wonder whether he'll lend it to me.

I enjoyed it too but at times the way he speaks and smiles puts me in mind if David Brent...... Phil I would like to qualify that to say that I do quite like Martin Simpson. I think he's a top class musician and I love a lot of his 'less wordy' work and of course all his instrumental stuff. Phil
