The thing is Martin has always worked with British luthiers with a view to getting a better sound. I think he used Jonathan Weir Guitars (might have got that name wrong). When he was in the USA he played with guitars made by a number of people who are now luthier superstars! If you watch the Taran guitar videos Rory describes how working with Martin has improved his art.
Simpson may not be everybody’s cup of tea but his dedication to his craft and tools is of a magnitude greater than anybody else I’ve come across.
BTW, I really like his songwriting now - even the Wordy ones!

Simpson's 'Leaves of Life' CD was a light bulb moment for me and really changed what type of acoustic guitar instrumental music I preferred.
I found it from Stefan Grossman's 'stable' of guitar albums (Shannachie) and ironically it took me away from the music Stefan and his ilk played ie blues and ragtimey stuff. I still appreciate it though.
That was 30 years ago.......
