New series starting on BBC4 (TV) this coming Friday. 9 programmes in total tracing Country music from its origins in Hillbilly. Whilst its not my favorite genre I like some artists and music and should be quite interesting.
One to record the series and watch on dark winter nights I reckon.

I didn't spot this - must get onto iPlayer. Was a good night on BBC4 on Friday then - I'm still working through their Blue Note documentary which is very good.
Country music is a funny one. I'd describe myself as a country fan, but like any genre, that probably means I like a small % of it all - I'm really into the singer-songwriters who avoided the Nashville sound - Steve Earle and Townes van Zandt, Eric Taylor and Guy Clark, John Prine and Kris Kristofferson. I'm also quite fond of the hot pickers - Albert Lee, James Burton, and so on. Then there's the country rockers - Gram Parsons, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou. And of course, I love bluegrass- not so much when they start singing, but the instrumentalists like Bryan Sutton and Tony Rice and especially David Grier.
Hell, looks like I am a big country fan, after all!

There is a whole new generation of country singers and songwriters who draw from a wider range of traditions. Should be an interesting series in that the routes and modern day stuff should balance the syrup of big music Nashville.

Ahha! I think this is the series that the americans have been raving about on the AGF and UMGF etc. it is "country Music" by Ken Burns - the guy who makes very long, very slow documentaries about all things 'merican.
It starts this coming Friday - 22nd at 9.30 with episode 1 & 2 of nine. (approx an hour at a time.
Better delete my F1 recordings on my Sky box! (exciting race on Sunday btw!)

There are some good new country artists bucking the awful country stuff like Garth, such as Colter Wall and Tyler Childs.

'Well, there's thirteen hundred and fifty two guitar pickers in Nashville and every one can play the guitar twice as better than I will' ...and they can sing as well

Not a fan of country but it might have interesting parts. If it is thorough the glitzy stuff will only be part of the offer!

And hopefully a small part! I think a lot of regular (*) people still equate country with that glitzy stuff. But there's some great stuff out there. I mean, let's be honest, the Beatles were a country band :-)
(*) non guitarists

Friday night is music night for us, BBC Four gets a look in. However I told my partner about this and she said "If you watch this I'm going to bed" 😆

I haven't seen it yet, but here's the Guardian's verdict: amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/nov/21/country-music-by-ken-burns-review-bbc4If you're interested in this kind of stuff there's an excellent podcast called Cocaine & Rhinestones written and presented by Tyler Mahan Coe, who is David Allen Coe's son and touring guitarist. It provides a very good history of country music, particularly some of the parts that aren't usually covered by more mainstream documentaries.
