My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

Just back from a lovely evening in the company of our very own lavaman and Steve Tilston. I got there early (about 1 minute after Steve had turned up!) so was in time to watch his meticulous soundcheck - I think he was feeling a little cold... Iain opened the evening with a short set of 6 songs (well, 5 songs and 1 choon) which were really well received. He opened with a cover, then did 4 of his own material, before finishing off with a cracking version of The Nativity Song. There really is no greater honour than hearing one of your own songs being played by someone else and being well received by an audience, which laughed in all the appropriate places. Thanks, Iain. Then on to the main event. A set split into two halves. He was accompanied (as he was last time I saw him at this venue) by Steve Bradley on double bass - it really does add something to the sound and Steve B is an extraordinarily good player. Steve played a number of songs from his most recent retrospective album, Distant Days, and (following the time he spent with us at Halifax during which he shared one of his 'works in progress' which only, at that time, had the one verse) it was great to hear the finished version of the complete song which is now called 'The Satellite Decrees'. It's, like, y'know, dead good. Whether through timing or choice, Slip Jigs and Reels didn't feature as his encore song - the first time I've ever heard it missed from his set. Instead, he finished with what he introduced as his 'most autobiographical song' - the marvellously evocative 'The Road When I was Young'. Below is a version from about 10 years ago... A cracking evening, so it was, and only £12. Value for anyone's money is that

Thank you leoroberts for coming out to listen to live music on a cold winter's night when you could have curled up on the sofa and watched Strictly. Cracking review as well (BTW the bass player is called Hugh) Glad you enjoyed my version of Nativity Play, the audience certainly loved the humour. I enjoyed Steve's new songs "Crying Shame" and "Nothing to see here" He has such a large repertoire of good songs so introducing the new stuff will mean not enough room for all of the old favourites.

lavaman and leoroberts pleased to hear that your evening went so well. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it as I had booked tickets for a Martyn Joseph concert some time ago. Perhaps more to follow on this later.
