This sudenly appeared in my Youtube feed the other day. It is a half an hour cable TV programme from 1988 of a younger Martin Simpson. This was during his time in the USA. Interesting to see him singing Born Human, a song that has only just appeared on his latest CD.
He's playing two guitars on this programme. The first — a fingerstyle instrumental — is played on a signature model from Dana Bourgeois. This is a modfiueild dreadnaught, 12 fret join with a very pronounced florentine cutaway. I remember these being made but I've never seen footage of Simpson actually playing one. (The only other one I've seen was on Dream Guitars). It makes me wonder whether they actually sold any of these? Sounds fine here though. The second guitars — which accompanies songs — seems to be one of his earliest forays into Sobell land — I guess it is a Sicilian.
For younger people, yes people really did talk like that back then!

Enjoyed the instrumentals although I can say his singing has improved since then.

There was a Bourgeois Martin Simpson model for sale recently on Gumtree In Toowoomba Queensland. Didn’t fancy the 2 hour drive from Brisbane to try it.
The only Sobell I’ve played was one of his Archtops that a guy had at an Eric Roche workshop in Bath circa 2001. It was very different to the Taylor I owned then.

Sobells have a distinct sound and are often quite difficult to play. You seem to need to be very assertive with them!

I used to own the CD 'Red Roses' he mentions near the end that he did with his wife at the time Jessica. Eventually took it to the charity shop - the saying 'love is deaf as well as blind' comes to mind. He was good on it but listening to Jessica singing was, let's say, challenging........
Thanks for posting Andy.
