Hello everyone,
Rosie Heydenrych of Turnstone guitars asked me to check out some of her new instruments this week, two of which feature Monterey Cypress soundboards - a new one on me! Have a listen and let me know your thoughts!
Here's a TM model (15" lower bout) with Fenland Black Oak on the back and sides. This is one of Rosie's E series guitars and it's very inspiring to hear what she's doing with English woods.
And here's a TG - Rosie's 16" sj model in Cocobolo with a Monterey Jack soundboard
If you want to contrast with some more traditional woods here's a cutaway TG in Brazilian Mahogany and Alpine Spruce
There's a full write-up on my blog too if you fancy. I recorded a video interview with Rosie too and I'll share that here as soon as it's ready!
All the best
Michael

I played one of Rosie’s cypress tops a few years ago - a small guitar that sounded lovely. I believe Martin owns it now.

I can say with some certainty that Monterrey Cypress does indeed make a very fine soundboard (in Rosie's hands ) Haven't had a chance to view the vids yet, but looking forward to it

I thought cypress had a definite sound, a bit similar to cedar. It’s not something I would use as I like to dig in more. It did sound great for James Taylor style picking.
I’ve played a few big oak guitars now, including those from Rosie and Adrian. They look great but have been somewhat lacking in sound for me. However, a guitar made of English woods has an attraction. But the problem might simply have been my technique !

Nice. Does an all cypress guitar exist? Jonny That's a very good question Jonny! I'm far more familiar with cypress as a back and side wood than a soundboard. I'd be intrigued to see what's possible
