We're very lucky here to live a very short distance from two small but beautiful live music venues. Last night I saw the legend that is John Doyle, appearing with John McCusker and Michael McGoldrick at the Woodside Hotel in Aberdour, the next village along the road. Sitting within a few yards of the low stage, I was in total awe, unable to take my eyes off him. Undoubtedly one of the very best acoustic guitarists I've ever seen and none has made it look so effortless. I thought you might be interested to know what he was playing. I didn't recognise the guitar or the guizouki so I asked him. They were both made by Kevin Muiderman (pronounced as in Spiderman) of North Dakota, a luthier I'd not heard of but no doubt some of you will. He clearly uses some quite novel techniques, very successfully I'd say as they sounded totally gorgeous. He also coaxed some lovely sounds from a thin-bodied semi-acoustic Taylor which had f-holes and a sound port, visible in one of the photos. I haven't been able to find this on Taylor's website.

I opened for John when he played Northwich Folk Club last year. He’s an incredible player, and a really nice guy. The Taylor is a T5 - I think it’s been discontinued now in favour of the slightly smaller T5z.

Oh, and that’s not a sound port on the shoulder of the Taylor - it’s the selector switch for the pickups.

The Muidermans have double tops with some kind of kevlar inbetween.. Stab-proof. Ideal for Glasgow. I saw the same set from that trio in Milngavie on the first night of their current tour. 3 extraordinary musicians who work their socks off to give great performances. By the way, kudos, Richard!!

I've nothing to add, other than I flipping love John Doyle.
