So the lockdown got the better of me. After a few weeks of videos and reviews and a stressful time at work. I bought a guitar online. I got a Taylor Grand Pacific 717e I managed to get a good deal off list price and as part of a Taylor promotion a Baby Taylor was also included. I learned a big lesson in buying online. This guitar is well made, looks great. However, it is not right for me. It just doesn’t feel right. When I play my other guitars there is this feeling I get, that inspires and fills me with joy. However, when I play the Taylor..... I get nothing. So - it has gone back. I will wait until we are through the lockdown and will then begin the search. Images below. Hopefully they work. flic.kr/p/2iRFAqoflic.kr/p/2iRBdePJubbo

Whenever I've had extensive try before I buy try-outs in shops before making a decision I reckon on average I have to try at least 6 acoustics before I find one of much interest - so no wonder that an on-line buying attempt is a gamble.
I've also found that I get no better a hit rate of good 'uns that suit in trying out expensive "quality" guitars than I do in trying out the lower-mid budget end of the range.
I've had a 50% success rate over the years with 6 online bought acoustics which was just good luck.
Of the 3 that worked out for me I still have two (same type - different woods) and they're often played - only bought online because only one local place ever had one in stock and it was such a bad set up i couldn't tell if it was any good! I recall one that went back in the box to be returned after playing just one chord. Much the same impact on my musical senses as chalk squeaking on a blackboard - but a highly recommended guitar.

I wouldn't know what a 3 grand guitar should look or play like. What I'd like to have a play on should be had for around a grand or just over.
1) A Furch short scale steel string. 2) Most any short scale hybrid nylon string guitar in the £1000 bracket. (Don't think there are many to choose from).

After watching the BBC “countrier than you” doc that was recommended on this forum I have disappeared down an outlaw/Texas country music rabbit hole. Some real great stuff there. What guitars do people most associate with that sound. Obviously a twanging telecaster. But for the acoustics I would think of a Gibson J-45 or a Martin D-28. Are there any other D style guitars that nail that cowboy tone?

I'd probably buy one of Richard Knott's crossover nylon strings, or perhaps a Waterloo or a Fylde Ariel. I played a used Ariel once in TAMCO that blew me away. And I loved Richard Knott's Waterloo at HB10.
If we're talking £3k down payments, that would be Nigel Keniry's Kim Walker 000 that I got to try at Kim's workshop when I picked mine up. Pretty sure Nigel ain't selling though!

This lockdown is playing tricks on my brain. My wife and I both have full time jobs and are working from home. We certainly have it better than most and I’m not complaining. However, we also have a 5 year old daughter. She is fantastic, but a month of trying to juggle our work, childcare and home schooling is taking its toll. I’m completely frazzled. She goes to bed at 7:30pm, and that’s when I catch up on all the work I should have done. I know, I’m fortunate to still have a job, but 4 weeks of this change of cycle has really hit me and made me realise how important “down time” is. The guitar has been a total saviour. At Bedtime my daughter and I have recently been having a real good sing song before she goes to bed. Then as she falls asleep I noodle away in the room next door. I really notice the difference in my mood and stress levels when I do this. It’s almost like a total reset for the brain. Without it I think I would have been really struggling at this point.
Anyway, back to topic. I managed to convince myself that an HD-28e is what is needed to fill the missing hook on my wall. I made an offer on one that I thought would be rejected.... it arrives this week.

The last few days I’ve been thinking that what I really need is a nice 12 fret Torridge from Brook - I’d ask them for whatever reclaimed/native woods would give me a good rich bass and low mids without sacrificing sparkle on top and keep it nice and simple, wood binding, purfling and rosette, very plain, maybe a satin finish
46mm nut, 60 mm saddle spacing, 25.4 scale length and a big neck modelled after my om28v, jobs a good un

just realised that what I'd actually go for with £3K is a Waterloo WL-14 (Not sure if I'd got X or L braced)... I've got my 'pretty' sounding guitars, and what I'd like is a proper 'dry woody songwriter-y' one... "Dry woody songwritery" are almost the exact words I used to describe my Recording King ROS-06 to someone recently. They occasionally crop up secondhand on eBay, Reverb or Gumtree, usually for around £100-£150. I bought mine off Gumtree about 2 years ago. They can almost sound a little too dry and woody, but when you put the right strings on them (I prefer Earthtones mediums on this one) they really sing. There's something very 1970s about their sound.

Bit of a cop-out, but I have sold 3 guitars simply because my Lowden is so good I don't need anything else apart from a 12.
If I could, I'd buy a slightly different instrument. Now, I have no idea if I could get a playable one for £3k but I have been fascinated with a chap on youtube who plays a hurdy-gurdy. So, if I could, I'd buy one of those.
