Going over a lot of my old LPs and transferring them into MP3 using Audacity, when I rediscovered this truly great song. This is another example of the brilliant, unparalleled, lyrics written by Kris Kristopherson, as I've said before he is the reason I stopped trying to write lyrics. This is probably one of the saddest songs ever written. This version was on John Denver's 'Aerie' album, I know a lot of people turn their nose up at the mention of John Denver, but he could be as great a performer as any with the right song. This one really showcases what he could do.

Totally in agreement, colins. Darby’s Castle another that’s often overlooked. Great songwriting.

I picked a copy of Aerie in second hand shop years ago and for me Carey’s Last Ride is the standout track. Johnny Cash did it really well on his latter set of recordings. Although I have never been a great fan of John Denver I was impressed when he was a guest on some American show when he walked onto the set playing Dallas Rag on his twelve string before being introduced by the compère.

Always love this song, and fully in agreement about the quality of KK's lyrics (well, the whole thing - the melody and the variation in the chorus/verse is just great).

I have tried to play this song over the years and have never been able to do it justice, this thread has had me thinking about it again and I remembered about this rendition
