Keith, I don't know if you remember, it's nearly 10 years ago. It was your recording of this song that made me write my first post on the AcousticLife forum.
And I really do like Stephen Wake's version, too.

Stephen is a really fantastic player isn't he? If you had watched me trying to play this arrangement first then Stephen's playing would seem more the better. I recall trying to learn this and it would just not sink in. In this video I was just trying it out to see how it sounded whilst reading the tab but I soon realised I would not be able to play it as good as this again Sorry to tag onto your post Akquarius Phil It was a cold snowy day hence the fashionable clothes............

Blimey, Phil! I have no idea what you are complaining about This is brilliant! And yes, Stephen Wake is an exceptionally good guitar player. I have his CDs on loop atm. He just released a new one which is Called Celtic Guitar Duets on Bandcamp

I've just listened to both versions twice and for me, the Phil Taylor version sounds beautifully smooth and tranquil as his playing always does. It's probably just opinion as to whether or not one is actually played better than the other and playing at that level is beyond my ability to comment anyway. I also always avoid better or worse comparisons as I rarely find them helpful. What comes across to me is just 2 different styles of playing and one that I particularly like.

As I had not heard of Rosemary's Sister before this post, I thought I was just commenting on a lovely tune and hearing this with the lyrics really took me by surprise. Such a sad story that reflected many of stories told to me by my mother who was a child of WW2 and who lost some childhood friends, she had quite a few bombs fall around where she lived. She always said it was the doodlebugs that scared her the most, particularly the feeling she got when the engine stopped and then she knew it would fall. I had to find out a bit more about this song and who composed it. I found this video which shows many of scenes my mother used to describe to me and the remnants of which I can remember as they still remained for some years around where I grew up. Your version is truly outstanding, it conveys all the pathos and emotion that I would think is possible from a song, it's a wonderful arrangement that's beautifully sung and played, a real masterpiece.

jangarrack - Thanks v much - I still find it hard to sing RS without getting tearful. I have a more recent vid of me singing it somewhere but can't find it atm - I omitted much of the guitar solo bits as I was afraid I'd b*ll*x those bits up doing it live. As it was I still goofed towards the end, completely forgot how to finish it and had to busk a guitar bit till I remembered! I first heard the song years ago when Huw and Tony Williams were opening for Fairport Convention in Kendal -we lived in S Cumbria at the time. I bought their cassette tape, which tells you how long ago it was! There are some other cracking songs on there too, esp We stayed awake, about the joys of having a baby daughter - also quite moving! Here's Huw and Tony doing Rosemary's Sister - I never really got on with learning the song though until I heard Simon Nicol singing it which is where I nicked much of my guitar arrangement. In subsequent years I've loved seeing and hearing him do it several times with the rest of FC - If I find my cockup vid I'll post it too! Keith

Great album by Simon Nicol. The first version of From a Distance I heard was on it and the absolutely wonderful version of Live Not Where I Love with Linda Thompson on vocals. Superb guitar playing on these versions of Rosemary's Sister.

Just spent a few minutes listening to all of the versions posted, and quite honestly I think the Phil Taylor and ocarolan versions stand comparison with any. I'm a huge fan of Phil's playing, his effortless and sensitive touch makes any tune stand well, and Keith's playing is, as always, a masterclass in how to accompany a song. We have some very talented players on this forum. Colin

Thanks very much robmc and colins for the lovely comments Phil Er, what Phil said! And thanks for recent likes too. Tbh I reckon much of the magic is in the original writing of the song, which seems to survive very well through so many different versions. The melody is memorable and the lyric superb. Prob one of my Desert Island Songs. Keith
