Enjoy your new life pattern, Dave. You’re still going to be coming to HBs though? Right?

Dave I am sure that you will feel comfortable with a slightly less pressured lifestyle, I do wonder however if you will be able to resist the urge to give an old chest of drawers, or a wardrobe a new lease of life.
Best wishes and see you at the next HB
Ged.

I'm sorry to hear this Dave, but glad you're not giving up the game completely. Thank you for all your threads and contributions on here and to the luthier community. Hopefully still see you at the Halifax meet ups xx

Dave, this comes as a bit of a shock, and it seems like a huge decision, but that’s because you’ve been a constant and critical part of this forum since I can remember.
An ever present at our HB gatherings, you have been one of the biggest reasons for the excitement and joy that these events bring with your generosity and contributions.
Along with Colin (who you graciously involved in our little corner of the internet), your sharing, demonstration and donation of quality instruments has been overwhelming.
To say your build threads will be missed is an understatement and I’m so glad you’ll still be visiting the forum and HB when it arrives.
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done to make this forum what it is and for the time and patience you’ve shown over so many years answering all of our questions, and I hope this continues.
I hope you enjoy your ‘retirement’ and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Martin

Good Lord! Reading this, anybody'd think Dave had died and would be remembered on this forum fondly never to post again! Dave, my friend, I am so pleased that you've decided to follow this course. I can remember a conversation many years ago where you explained to me that luthiery would never be a paying proposition. So now you've relieved yourself of the pressure of commercialism and you can do what you want when you want. I'm sure you'll still regularly give us the benefit of your immense knowledge here, and, as people have already said, keep posting up your performance pieces in The Plucky Duck. It's grand that you'll still make a prize guitar for Halifax, and thank you for that. So bloody good on you, Chap. More power to your talented elbow. Enjoy the freedom.

I've not known you for anywhere near as long as the other guys and gals on the forum, but still plenty long enough to have learned what a generous chap you are, not to mention a terrific luthier. I wish you much leisure to enjoy the things you love that aren't guitar making and I hope to see you again in Halifax next time, if not before!

Wow Dave. I really can't believe it, I can understand it but that's just not the same. It's been superb looking and touching your instruments at the HB events (I don't play my own) you're a great inspiration and I hope that you get as much out of your retirement as I have out of mine. Please keep safe and enjoy having nothing! to do...

I want to say a big Thank You for all your contributions here (build threads and helpful comments) and all resources and information on your web site. They’ve been very important in my own quest to learn the trade. I wish you the very best in your new semi-retired life and am glad that you won’t stop building completely. And I hope you’re still willing to share your knowledge in a comment or two!

Hello Dave,
A shame to hear you are ceasing commercial operations but best of luck for your retirement and making instruments on a basis for your enjoyment. Thanks again for letting me try all your guitars a few years back, I enjoyed the experience greatly and maybe one day I'll have another one of your great guitars in my hands again.

Thanks for all your kind comments - I'm touched. I've "retired" three times now so have form and am not changing the house name to "Dunlutherin" just yet. I seem to have also become a bespoke narrow boat fitter so will be more than busy. Thanks also to those of you that have joined my new building list - the good news is that Martin has found a way for me to post build threads with pictures that show - or the bad news I suppose depending on your point of view

All power to you, Dave, and to the present and future projects undertaken with more breathing space in wich to accomplish them.
When I told my literary agent I was retiring she gave me a telling off that only made me more determined to shut down, but some of the things she said struck home. One was, "I've seen it time and again. Just when you say you've stopped the next idea comes and you're off again like a clockwork soldier." Although she was talking about writers I suspect the same principle applies to creative people in general, and I think you're taking the right approach in keeping all of the tools nice and sharp behind the CLOSED sign.
