I haven't owned an electric for 15 years or so, and haven't played one for longer than that, but finally decided to indulge a long held whim to own a Tele, with the justification (mostly to Mrs O'C) that it would be just the thing for adding some tasteful twiddles to my weekly multitrack recordings of hymns and songs for our weekly Youtube church service. Cheap and cheerful it would have to be, and hopefully the consequent limitations would not show up too badly when recording direct into PC and suitably tweaked. We'll see! So obvs, following in the footsteps of Onechordtrick, it had to be a Squier Bullet Tele - £129 from GAK. Brilliant service - ordered 1pm yesterday - arrived on doorstep at 9am this morning. Mr Fedex pointed out the partially open ends of the box due to staples pulling through, but was happy to let me photograph him and the box ends and wait until I'd unpacked the guitar - which turned out to be just fine. Could have had a black one or two-tone sunburst, so no contest really. Finish looks really good, the setup seems spot on, no dodgy fret ends and it plays well with no rattles and feels good. Sound like, er, a Tele. Or at least as far as I can tell through my little Yammy keyboard monitor. Glyn has my AER at the moment so a better blast will have to wait, as will some test recording into PC, hopefully with some reverb and stuff. I'll keep you posted. Keith

Oops! I seem to be a malevolent influence on an acoustic forum!
Congratulations though, I’m really pleased with mine. As you say they’re well built and come well set up, all I needed to do was lower the action on mine to how I prefer it. I took it to a local* tech to sort the nut for heavier strings and he was very impressed with the neck.
* I moved house 10 days before lockdown and was fortunate to find a well respected tech within 5 minutes walk of my front door. He also won’t do more work than is necessary; I’d asked him to fit a new nut but his view was the slots just needed sorting.

Oops! I seem to be a malevolent influence on an acoustic forum! ... that's why this section exists! Glad you're still enjoying yours. 9s are too light for me too, so I'll put some 10s at least on it, maybe with heavier bottoms. (ooer) The relief and action are just fine right now, though obvs may need a tweak or two with heavier strings. As an inveterate tinkerer I'm looking forward to that! The narrow nut width is not v nice, but I'll not be playing anything complicated on it so hopefully I'll accommodate. Also top e is perilously close to the f/b edge above the 12th fret, but I doubt I'll venture there too often. Any recommendations re string brands anyone....? Keith

I put Newtones on mine but that’s as much because I was putting in an order and he had some in stock. My view is that string choice, once you have your preferred weight on, is less important on an electric guitar as there are so many other things that shape the sound: the pickups, wiring, amplifier and any effects that you’ve added.

Well done Keith, looks like a cracker and agree with you that a sunburst finish is much nicer than black on a Tele. Hope we can all look forward to some Ted Greene/Julian Lage type videos from you now Phil

Thanks chaps. Really pleased there were no cries of "Judas"! Shan't be appearing on vid with it though, Phil - it's scary enough doing that with an acoustic, and I doubt I could do a convincing solo electric guitar thingy anyway! However, I do have some very rough and ready sounds for you. I need to record quickly and simply without faffing with lots of gear setting up (gave that up a while back!) so I just plugged the Tele into a DI box, then into the line in socket of my Zoom H2n and thence to USB and PC to record direct into my usal Cakewalk software. Almost inevitable my 1/4 " jack to mini jack adapter didn't want to co-operate, but after a bit of wiggling and carefully propped up positioning it did the job until I find where my other ones are. Reasonable sounds right away, yay! So I did a fairly stumbling multitrack recording - please forgive poor timing and fingerfumbles here and there - I have a lot to learn when it comes to these new-fangled electrical geetars. app.box.com/s/1ugertgvit06dort57pfzcctoqyfqhr4The tracks are all dry, no eq or effects - my next task is to find some suitable gentle reverb etc to thicken up the single note lead sound. Quite like the arpeggiated bits as they are. I'll let you know how I get on! Hope y'all are having a good weekend. Stay safe. Keith

Sounds like you're having fun Keith and that is the name of the game! As you say very good sound right off the bat even listening on my phone, will certainly add another dimension to your recordings. Will be interested to hear how it all comes together

Nice Keith, do like a Tele. One of my biggest regrets was selling my 1963 in Vintage Blonde, just because I needed to buy a house! I can recommend the GHS, David Gilmour Boomers, they do them in 10-48 and 10.5-50.
I do expect to hear some Status Quo covers from you now. (Or maybe just some Michael Chapman)

nice one, Keith! What's next? A Fender Hot Rod Deluxe wouldn't be the worst of choices when looking for a proper amp. I suppose you're not going to use that one when playing in the church?

When I heard the first few bars I was expecting a cover from Blonde on Blonde. Cool sunburst by the way Have fun

Nice one, Keith! I can't help on the strings, mine's a baritone.
What might be of interest though, is I skipped out on the pedal. I got a Blackstar Echo 10, which has their clever ISF EQ function, overdrive, and delay, which gives me all the sound variation I want. Obviously, it's not much cop for swapping FX mid-song, but it works great for me. There's a line in and line out on it too, but haven't tried any recording... my laptop might laugh at me.
I also have a friend who uses a Fly3, which I think has pretty much all the same wizardry, but just a lower output. It might give you the sound spectrum you need to play around on, without tumbling down the FX pedal rabbit hole too early.

Nice geetar there. Well done for the recording, too. Strings wise, I use Elixirs for electrics but D'addario and Fender knock out some great strings, too. You'll get a much better sound from a proper electric combo. Cheap as chips, is the fender Mustang series. Well done mate!

When you do stumble down the pedal rabbit hole don’t dismiss the Behringer range. They seem to be Boss clones but a fraction of the price. Only potential downside is they have plastic cases but they’re pretty robust and I don’t imagine you’ll be jumping on them from height in church. If you please post a video This video compares with the Boss equivalents and they generally come out favourably. I got the chorus, reverb and equaliser which I’m happy with.

Coincidentally, I have also investigated a cheap Squier electric during lockdown - not having played an electric for years and years. I decided to get my late-1990s Squier Jagmaster out of the attic, where it has lain untouched for about 15 years. As its name suggests, it is a cheap electric in the fender jaguar/jazzmaster vein. It's very simple: two humbuckers, three switch positions, 1 volume knob, 1 tone knob.
Coincidentally I am playing it through my AER Acoustic 60 amp. The guitar sounds way more bassy than I remember it. But that may be because I am playing fingerstyle jazz on it, whereas when I last played it I was a callow youth playing distorted indie rock with a plectrum and a Colorsound Fuzztone distortion pedal.
My AER 60 has a a decent built-in reverb. (It also has built in chorus which I'm ashamed to say I never even noticed until now) It seems almost too good to be true that two of the pickup positions sound remarkably warm and jazzy, given that playing jazz was the sole reason I dusted off the electric out of curiosity. But then again I suppose a jazz sound is largely about a clean, warm tone - and the AER amp certainly gives you clean, while picking medium guage strings gently in the lower register certainly gives you warm.
I'm finding the narrow nut width hard to adjust to, but getting there. Playing a narrower nut on an electric for some reason doesn't feel quite as awkward as playing a narrower nut on an acoustic - I guess because it feels like an entirely different instrument.
It still hasn't quite scratched my itch for a proper jazz box. I'm currently eyeing up the cheap and cheerful Hartwood Novella (with its 44.5mm nut... nice)

Congrats on the 'leccy Keith! I see you play electric with the same degree of good taste as you do with an acoustic. With regard to some tasty twiddlings you could do a Christy Moore recording or two, singing and playing acoustic, and let your inner Declan Sinnott roam free on the Tele. Mark
