For those that have the funds and are in the market for a special version of an already special guitar ; www.sobellguitars.com/news-page/He's only aiming at building 9, and by the sounds of it, most of these will be reserved as soon as he opens the orders. By Stefan's very restrained standards, the logo is quite a change (Not sure if I like it or not myself), but it will certainly identify the anniversary guitars. Interestingly, he also seems to be hinting at possibly winding down after he has finished these specials, although given how much he seems to enjoy the building process itself I'd be surprised if he did.

I doubt he will ever wind down, but his winding down is everybody else's flat out!
His aesthetic is very understated and classy and I think the logo fits well with that.
I'm not sure what is different about the guitars though, apart from the logo, as you can order whichever model you want.

Jonny I think if I had found a job that I was as well suited to as Stefan is to guitar building, retirement would never have crossed my mind and I also doubt he'll fully stop. I think I need to see the logo on a fully built guitar to make my mind up, but as you rightly point out, it's very distinctly a 'Sobell' design. Only real difference I can see is that he's using his stocks of old but newly registered Brazilian rosewood (and I'm sure there'll be some minor evolution in bracing).

I'm sure he experiments on every guitar, always trying out new things. His major change in bracing was the Steinbeck, as you'll know, giving a bigger bass and more 'open' sound being more rewarding for the player. Is your 'S' a slimline version of that? Jonny

Hi Jonny - sorry for the late reply, the garden never rests.
Yes, mine's an 'S' which is the slimline. When I played Maurice Condie's fine selection of Sobells, I realised that I prefer a more slimline body (I've tended towards OM's in the past and I was very nearly won over by a Martin M36 at one point which is also slimline). I didn't get an opportunity to play a Steinbeck 'S' before I placed my order, but I did play the Verona which is VERY slim and was impressed with the overall bass response so figured I'd be on safe ground. It didn't disappoint.
Just out of interest - what strings do you you use on your Steinbeck? I'm still on the original EJ16's as fitted but really should change them now....

Intriguing. Sure these will be amazing guitars (I am lucky enough to have jonny’s old 6 string and a 12 string archtop). Be interesting to see if there is anything different to the current range apart (!) from the headstock and the old stock brazilian. That said, the current range is pretty special.

Stefan's work has been exceptional recently, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on an example of his new Verona model too!

I use EJ16s 12s, as it is set up for lights - I've tried almost every brand and come back to those, best value for sound (I still have a few left in a multi-pack box Stefan gave me years ago, all the top Es used, but I usually replace them with 13s for DADGAD). Thanks Jonny. I ended up changing them last weekend before a bit of an outdoor get together with friends. Big mistake - I had a spare set of elixir 12-53 which have always suited my Larrivee, but they are completely lost on the Sobell. Stefan did comment that he didn't like Elixirs on his guitars, and I have to say he was right. This weekend, I shall be mostly changing them back to EJ16's..... unless I make a quick detour to a set of Nickel Bronze I have lurking in the kit box.

I've always found coated strings to be very dull in comparison with uncoated. I'm convinced guitarist love them because, in comparison with with the old strings, they sound very bright. I did a like-for-like comparison once: 6th coated, 5th uncoated, 4th coated, 3rd uncoated - the difference was immense. Jonny
