I don't know how many of you have come across Rick Beato's YouTube channel "Everything Music" but it's about my favourite channel on YT. A massive mixture of interviews, theory lessons, anecdotes, sound recording tips and, of course, guitar playing tips. Even the stuff that's way over my head is (mostly) interesting. I have also bought his Beato book, which I recommend. Any road up, in his series "What Makes This Song Great" the latest installment is about Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", and whenever I see anything about GL, I immediately think of fatfingerjohn . So this one's for you, John. I hope you find it interesting. I have put it into The Acoustic Cafe because that's where so many YT vids go. If our lovely mods think this inappropriate, I'm very happy for them to move it wherever they think it should be.

Hey, you've just made my day in more ways than one. First through recalling me linked to this song and GL. And mainly with this absolutely fascinating breakdown of this amazing song. With a spooky coincidence I have just restarted my guitar group get togethers (split into 3 different groups of 5 outside in my open barn to meet regs) and I was trying to show a simplified version of this to some of the group last week. I will share the video with them now. I do now understand most of the nuances in the video (although can't play them all on 1 guitar!!) but this also highlights the amazing arrangements which are so much a feature of GL's work. Overall I play (to myself) over 30 or so GL songs and keep trying new ones that are just fabulous. As you can see I'm a bit GL obsessed. I think the subtle arrangements of some extremely clever people are vastly under-rated; the art is to make the song brilliant without anyone really knowing that there is an incredible fusion of instruments and tones behind the song. As a great example, for those not bored rigid by now with my ramblings, have a listen to a very rarely known GL song below. It starts with strings on just 1 note and that 1 note continues in the background THROUGHOUT the song on the same pitch, irrespective of the considerable changes in progressions that GL uses throughout. It's just a brilliant touch which probably most listeners miss. That's enough, but thanks again Paul for bringing this to my attention. I'll even forgive you now for winning the song-writing competition with that daft song about a German piano!!

scorpiodog - Really enjoyed that vid, Paul, thanks - not come across the blokey before but will investigate! If you could could read my mind is a achingly beautiful song, but how lovely to hear Red Shea's unobtrusively genius guitar work being celebrated so enthusiastically. fatfingerjohn - can't recall hearing that one before - reminds me that I should try to enlarge my quite limited knowledge of GLs work - thanks! Keith

Beato’s channel is superb - his Beato Book covers musical theory in a way nobody else does. Loved the GL episode.
Obsessive viewing for me this channel - almost as good as michaelwatts and cams :-)
