Short answer - no. In fact, I have to say that giving your instruments names, especially female names, seems somehow "creepy" to me.
So the names I call my guitars are for example, my "DS1" for my Collings DS1, and my |"National" for my resonator etc. Funny thing, like my cat, they never answer when I call them.

'Spanish' guitars are often given names, but by their builder rather than the owner. Torres named a number of his guitars to reflect their character, La Leona (the lioness) or FE19 'La Suprema'. My own build tornavoz 'Torres' now owned by Dave Hutton is called La Lena (The firewood) as a guitar is just that until its played. The guitar I built for Dave White is El Laventine as all the woods come from the eastern Mediterranean.

Once upon a time I gave a new guitar that I really liked a name. Seemed a good idea at the time. This made it doubly difficult when after not too long something changed in my ears and I suddenly found I disliked the sound of the guitar so much I had to sell it. Or due to the name I'd attached, when I had to sell her. Makes it too personal and disloyal and not just a business transaction. I didn't repeat the name giving practice after that.

Mark You do realise that we want to know the name you gave her ...

No. I don't have to name them to know I love them.
If I'd been the same with my children it would have saved so many useless marital arguments (well three, anyway).

My Tanglewood got a dent in the bottom near the strap button (no idea how) so my partner thought I should name him Arthur...geddit? Ah, you mean:
Slartibartfast : You must come with me. Arthur Dent : Who are you? Slartibartfast : What? No. My name's not important. You must come with me, or you'll be late. Arthur Dent : Late for what? Slartibartfast : Well, um, what's your name, Earthman? Arthur Dent : Dent. Arthur Dent. Slartibartfast : Well, late as in *the late* Dentarthurdent. It's a sort of threat. You see? Arthur Dent : No.

I find it odd when people refer to guitars as "she". I was talking to a woman about guitars once, she thought guitars were masculine because the neck seemed phallic, whereas I have heard men say they thought of guitars as feminine becasuse of the curved body shape.

No I don’t name guitars. They’re never around long enough. I just use date designations from when I got them. Today I’ll be digging out that old timer ‘July’
