Those of you that know me will know that DADGAD is where I play the most. The second A string has always been the hardest one to sound right - normally a plain steel 0.017" is used. When using a baritone guitar with DAGAD tuned down to Bb, the longer scale length means that a phosphor bronze wound 0.020" string can be used for the second string rather than a plain steel string and this gets rid of the "weirdness" of the second string. Until now 0.020" was the lowest wound string available and the tension is way too high to use it for the second string in DADGAD. When ordering a batch of individual strings this week I noticed that D'Addario now do a phosphor bronze wound 0.017" string so I ordered some. I am now a very happy bunny indeed with "DADGAD second string weirdness" a thing of the past - loving it All that D'Addario need to do now is offer a variant of their EJ24 set re[lacing the steel 0.017" with a phosphor bronze wound one.

I've not tried them but newtone appear to do a wound 16, as well as 17, 18, 19, etc.
Is the tension of the plain 17 and wound 17 similar?

Is the tension of the plain 17 and wound 17 similar? I don't have the string unit mass data for the D'Addario phosphor bronze wound 17 but their plain and wound 20's are very similar mass with the wound having maybe a pound or two less tension.
